Hungary joins March 19 Earth Hour presenting green innovations
Budapest, March 11 (MTI) – Hungary will join the global green action Earth Hour on March 19 with programmes addressing the theme of sustainable innovations, organisers said on Friday.
The main venue of programmes will be the Budapest Palace of Arts Müpa where a science trade show will present Hungarian innovations developed to offer solutions to problems posed by climate change.
Müpa will host the closing ceremony of WWF Hungary’s Green Generation programme presenting awards to outstanding green innovations by 14-16 year old talents in sustaining biodiversity and promoting the concept of smart cities.
WWF will also present its Living Danube Tour educational programme introducing the diverse wildlife in wetlands in five countries connected by the Danube river.
Müpa will also host a photo exhibition showing Hungarian national parks.
Out on Müpa ‘s terrace overlooking the Danube, a display of hundreds of pansies will be installed forming the green action’s global logo Earth Hour 60+ around which visitors will light candles as lights in the city go out.
Budapest will turn off city floodlights at 8.30pm when the Argentinian guest pianist of the National Philharmonic Orchestra, Ingrid Fliter, will perform a final piece on the instrument lit only by a spotlight.
At 8.30pm another twenty Hungarian localities will turn off their floodlights for an hour, thereby expressing their commitment to climate protection and environmental awareness.
The first Earth Hour campaign was held in Sydney in 2007. Hungary joined the initiative one year later.
