Will the Hungarian vaccine passport be accepted in the EU?
Based on the information provided by the Government Information Centre, the Hungarian vaccine passport will be accepted in the EU without the indication of the type of vaccine.
Previously, opposition party MSZP has been worried about what would happen to cross-border workers if, like Poland, no other member state accepted the vaccination certificate of workers who did not receive an EU-authorised vaccine. This was based on the fact that the government decree on the content of the vaccination certificate was amended unexpectedly over the weekend, as a result of which
the Hungarian vaccine passport will not indicate the type of vaccination received.
As Hungarian news portal Index reports, the decision has been made despite the fact that a few weeks ago, the government decided to set up a common vaccination card in the EU that includes the type of vaccination. The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, announced on 1st March that it would take at least three more months for the technical background for a common EU digital vaccination certificate to be established.
The Hungarian government has now referred to an earlier statement of the German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, according to which EU members would introduce vaccination certificates independently, at the national level, that would be valid throughout the EU as a common solution.
Based on this announcement, the Hungarian vaccination card will be valid throughout the EU; however,
Johannes Bahrke, spokesman for the European Commission, said that the previous decision would make it mandatory to indicate the type and manufacturer of the vaccine in the certificate, but negotiations are still in progress; therefore, it is too early to judge the consequences of the Hungarian government’s decision.
