Attacks show terrorism benefits from migration, says defence minister in Slovakia
Pozsony (MTI) – The terrorist attacks committed in Paris and Brussels have clearly proved that terrorism took advantage of migration targeting Europe, Defence Minister István Simicskó said at Globsec 2016, central Europe’s most significant foreign affairs and security policy conference, in Pozsony (Bratislava), on Friday.
The minister told reporters that he had met his German counterpart Ursula von der Leyen and the Slovak defence minister, Peter Gajdos. Both talks focused on topical security policy challenges, including migration, terrorism and the fight against the Islamic State terrorist organisation.
Concerning his meeting with the German minister, Simicsko said there has been some “shift in emphasis” in Germany’s security policy concerning migration.
“Some senior German politicians have recognised that Europe woke up too late,” Simicskó said, adding that awareness of the risks has triggered a defence mechanism.
Simicskó said his German counterpart admitted that illegal migrants should not be allowed to enter Europe uncontrolled and that Europe’s external borders should be reinforced.
