Explore the historical Budapest in a new virtual game! – VIDEO

Lost Budapest is a new entertaining computer game in which players can discover the pre-war face of the Hungarian capital. The adventurous historic game can be downloaded for free in both English and Hungarian languages from 28^th May.

Last year was the 75th anniversary of Budapest’s assault, during which a significant part of the city centre was destroyed. As a result, complete rows of houses disappeared on the banks of the Danube, and dozens of streets became unrecognisable. It is hard to imagine what it could have been like to go around the city at that time, which served as an inspiration for the developers of the new Budapest-themed computer game Lost Budapest – to evoke this experience to the man of today.

The project has been coordinated by Balázs Handler, who graduated as a mechanical engineer at Budapest University of Technology and Economics and recently works in research and development related to aircraft. Balázs, along with his Hungarian team, including engineering students from BME, started the joint work in 2016.

The first version of the game was named the Lost Bridge that focused on Budapest’s important symbol, the Elizabeth Bridge, built in 1903. This has been virtually recreated based on old photos, plans and self-made 3D models. The Hungarian developers soon realised that it might be worthwhile to develop this into a PC game. Accordingly, the virtual game was created with a small story built around it in order to make it more enjoyable. The Lost Bridge has been downloaded more than 3,000 times since March 2020.

Based on this concept, the project developers decided to make the bridge-themed program more universal, focusing on the missing cityscape of Budapest.

As a result of which, its final version, Lost Budapest, has been created, available for free in both English and Hungarian languages from 28^th May.

The computer game visualises several iconic sites of Budapest, including the Elizabeth Bridge, the Gellért Hill, the Danube quay, the Chain Bridge, the Buda Castle, the Liberty Bridge and the surrounding areas.

The game evokes the atmosphere of pre-war Budapest, with contemporary vehicles, music, photos, posters and radio broadcasts.

As the Hungarian news portal Octogon reports, we can also see the city through the optics of old cameras. Thus we can recreate a more well-known old Budapest photo. Furthermore, we can also change the times of the day, so different faces appear in the Hungarian capital.

The adventurous historic game consists of five levels that can be completed one by one after collecting enough coins to unlock the next level and continue the exploration. The game’s final goal is to get to the Royal Palace on the castle hill of Buda.
