Budapest proposes rules for e-bikes, e-scooters

Budapest’s General Assembly at its session on Wednesday will discuss creating regulations for the legal parking of shared micromobility devices such as rentable e-bikes and e-scooters in the capital.

E-scooters and similar devices can work well with public transport as part of a green and sustainable transport system, Samu Balogh, the mayor’s chief of staff, said at a briefing on Tuesday.

But problems arise because their storage is currently unregulated, many people leave e-scooters hazardously lying around.

He said that since central government regulation was lagging in this area, the capital had decided to step in and fill the void.

The plan, he said, was to park such devices securely at so-called micromobility points.

A further aim in the long term would be integrate public transport and micromobility services on a single app, he added.

The metropolitan council plans to come to agreements with district municipalities on uniform regulation, Balogh said.
