Warning: false call-up orders are being sent to Hungarians
False call-up orders are being distributed by unknown persons electronically and by post in the name of the Hungarian Defence Forces Command.
False call-up letters
The letters refer to an “emergency military situation that has entered into force,” according to a statement of the Ministry of Defence sent to MTI, according to Index.hu.
They emphasise in the statement that there is no mobilisation in Hungary, no declared state of war, therefore, the Ministry of Defence and the Hungarian Defence Forces refrain from false news and misleading the Hungarian people.
The Ministry of Defence and the Hungarian Defence Forces do not send out such letters of summons signed by Lieutenant General Romulusz Ruszin-Szendi, the Commander of the Hungarian Defence Forces. They would like to reassure the public and ask everyone not to believe the untrue rumours without any basis, as we can read in the article of 444.hu.
They added that there is peace in Hungary, and all the soldiers of the Hungarian Defence Forces are working to preserve it.
The Hungarian Defence Forces has voluntary reserves who have chosen to become reserve soldiers of their own free will. Only these volunteers are notified about certain tasks by the Defence Forces. The Ministry of Defence is taking the necessary legal action against the writers and senders of the false letters.
Rules of military service in Hungary
However, in the case of a military emergency, every Hungarian has a duty to defend the country. If a crisis situation occurs in Hungary, men aged 18-50 can be enlisted.
Based on the information in the Constitution:
“Every Hungarian citizen is obliged to defend the homeland.”
Military service in peacetime is voluntary. However, in a state of emergency and in a pre-emergency defence situation, part of society is obliged to provide military service. In the event of a state of emergency, there is a general mobilisation of armed forces, mainly men aged 18-50.
The Hungarian Government’s position
“Listen, Viktor, do you know what is happening in Mariupol? If you can, go down to the [Danube] bank, look at the shoes, and you’ll see that mass murders like this are happening all over the world. Russia is doing it today,”
said Ukrainian President Zelenskyy to PM Orbán at the European Council, as we can read in Portfolio.hu’s article.
Zelenskyy has asked Hungary to do two things: to vote in favour of extending sanctions to the energy sector and stop buying gas and oil from Russia, as well as to allow the transfer of arms and weapons to Ukraine.
Orbán rejected both requests, saying they were against Hungary’s interests, according to Portfolio.hu.
