VIDEO: Hungarian mountaineer rescued by Indian Army & Air Force after 30-hour search

After missing for 5 days, a Hungarian mountaineer was rescued by the Indian Army and Air Force.

A 38-year-old Hungarian national, Ákos Vermes was rescued from the upper reaches of Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar on Saturday after a 30-hour joint search operation by the Army and the Indian Air Force (IAF). According to authorities, the man is in a stable condition.

Ákos had got lost five days earlier in the Himalayan district of Kishtwar, in a valley in the Paddar region. Despite the inclement weather, the trekker was found and taken to hospital.

According to tribuneindia.com, Lieutenant Colonel Devender Anand said, “an Army team deployed in Dool, Kishtwar, in coordination with the IAF and the district administration carried out a 30-hour search to rescue him.” Exposed to inclement weather, he was given medical aid by the Army. The Hungarian Embassy has been informed about his well-being.

Vermes thanked the Indian Army for rescuing him. “I was in a very difficult situation…I am very thankful to the Indian army for finding and taking me to safety,” news agency PTI quoted Vermes as saying. As ndtv.com reports, the Deputy Commissioner of Kishtwar informed the Hungarian Embassy about Mr Vermes’ health condition through video call. A local journalist also shared a video of the Hungarian mountaineer in a hospital in India.

“I would like to thank the Indian Army and Air Force for finding me and taking me to safety,” Vermes starts the video by giving thanks to those who rescued him. “Ákos Vermes lost his way while trekking in Umasi La Pass in Himalayas,” the video continues.

“Vermes was rescued after a 30-hour-long search operation by army in rugged terrain. The foreign tourist was airlifted to Udhampur for treatment in an IAF chopper. Vermes expressed his gratitude toward Indian armed forces for saving his life.”

“I would like to thank the Indian Army and Air Force for finding me and taking me to safety from my trekking trip that unfortunately ended in a difficult session. I’m very thankful for all the search parties and everyone involved,” Vermes says.
