One of the most prestigious Hungarian universities is forced to close for three months because of soaring energy prices. Students will be able to take their exams but in a different way than they were used to. Below you may read the details about the drastic measures ELTE needed to introduce due to the crisis.
The Faculty of Science of Budapest’s ELTE University, one of the most prestigious institutions of higher education in Hungary, is forced to close its buildings for three months in the 2022/2023 academic year. The skyrocketing energy prices affect all sectors in Hungary, including local governments, educational institutions and museums. The temperature limit was reduced even in elementary and secondary schools to save money, 10perc.hu wrote.
The closure of several departments of the faculty is temporary and will be in effect between 5 December and 26 February.
Based on the dean’s instructions, the following rules will apply in that period on education and exams:
Until 3 December, the academic year continues as usual. There will be classes, research and events in the faculty’s buildings located in Budapest’s Infopark, on the Buda side of the Danube, next to the Budapest University of Technology and Economics.

The last week of the study period (5-10 December) will see consultations and tests in the faculty’s buildings.
Between 5 December and 26 February, the buildings will only be heated to 8 °C except for the rooms designated for research. In all other rooms of the building, permanent work is banned. People can stay inside only as long as it is inevitable. Using additional heating devices is strictly forbidden. Moreover, there will be no organised events during that period.
Furthermore, entrance will be restricted to the buildings of the faculty. The only exceptions will be those who received a special permit from the dean.
Between 12 and 17 December, the autumn break will take place. The exam period will start on 19 December and last until 10 February. The exams will be held in external venues, online and in the faculty’s buildings in case that is inevitable. Ph.D. students will be able to defend their thesis online.

The registration period for the spring semester will be between 13 and 19 February. Interestingly, the spring break will start immediately, on 20 February, lasting until 25 February.
The faculty buildings will reopen for education, research and events on 27 February, waiting for early spring and milder temperatures.
