Opposition: reassure people their savings won’t be touched, Fidesz reacts with a threat
The Democratic Coalition (DK) suggests that the government should reassure people that it does not intend to touch their savings. Meanwhile, the Hungarian National Bank has filed a complaint against DK politician László Varju.
Klára Dobrev, shadow prime minister of DK, said that on Friday, DK’s deputy leader László Varju asked the government to make it clear that it does not want to touch people’s savings in banks. This is in connection with the words of central bank governor György Matolcsy earlier this week.
DK: Clarify instead of threaten
Dobrev said that instead of clarifying the situation, Fidesz reacted to the announcement with a threat that the government majority would take away László Varju’s parliamentary posts. They also said that criminal proceedings would be launched against him, and even the central bank filed a complaint against him on the same day.
“There is only one thing to say: hands off of László Varju! We reject all government threats; neither the shadow government nor the Democratic Coalition can be intimidated,” Klára Dobrev said. He added that in this situation they should not threaten, but clarify whether the government agrees with György Matolcsy and wants to touch the savings of the public, napi.hu writes. The shadow prime minister stressed that there will be a lot more discussion on this issue if Fidesz continues to threaten instead of explaining and clarifying.
Background information
The case comes after Máté Kocsis, the leader of the Fidesz parliamentary group, initiated the removal of László Varju from all his parliamentary posts. The reason is that, according to Kocsis, the DK politician is spreading rumours and thus helping to attack the forint. The Fidesz politician also threatened to initiate criminal proceedings against László Varju and the media outlets that published his statements. Since then, the Hungarian National Bank has already filed a complaint and the police are investigating.

Mr. Varju is doing what opposition politicians should be doing. Let’s see if our Politicians tactics work (one should hope not).
Next step perhaps, follow the lead of Mr. Putin – just start criminalizing things:

No dialogue o debate, all fight and posturing. How unfortunate (for all of us).
