Scandalous: planting three trees costs more than EUR 320 thousand in Hungary – PHOTO

The local government of the 5th district (Belváros) of Budapest planted three trees in Szomory Dezső Square. The trees cost more than 100 million while Hungary and all local governments are struggling with the energy and economic crisis. The leadership of the Belváros says the trees are huge and will provide shade next summer, but the opposition believes only the sums are extra-size. Decide it for yourself: we present a photo of the trees below.

According to rtl.hu, the extra-size trees were planted last week in the soil of the Dezső Szomory Square, one of the iconic meeting points of Budapest’s downtown. Using the Stockholm method, the procedure costs multiple times more than traditional tree planting. Főkert, Budapest’s central green management company, said the method is worth utilising when planting lines of trees.

The method’s biggest advantage is that the trees will be healthier and live 2-3 times longer. However, the costs are sky-high. In this particular case, the following items were included in the more than EUR 320 thousand:

  • purchasing the three trees: EUR 75,000
  • planting with the Stockholm method: EUR 75,000
  • automatic irrigation system, the revamp of the electric system: EUR 100,000
  • additional administration, architectural, design and control measures: EUR 27,000.

The deadline for the project is 30 April. The local government said the trees would provide shade for the residents next summer.

Here is the RTL’s photo of a tree the local government talked about as an “extra-size tree”:

  1. We frequent this square often, as our Pub is part of it.
Trees in the summer, will give shade in the height of the day early pm that the square gets exposure to the full sun-light.
The trees will add colour and life to this square with the massive numbers of daily citizens and tourists walking through it to “other” places.
I have written to the Mayor of District V on numerous occasions – requesting the REPAIR and the making of being OPERATIONAL again – the fountain “off center” – placed in the square.
Never have I received a response and the fountain in FACT has operated lastly 3 summers back.
Hope in ALL this massive expenditure of our the tax payers money who reside in District V – that the PLUMBER has been engaged to get the fountain and OTHERS in District V – operational AGAIN.
Ridiculous having the beautiful artistic fountains spread throughout Budapest, installed erected to have flow of Water but just DRIED up.
The fountain in the immediate front of the Church of St Francis in Ferenciek ter (English the Square of the Franciscans) – dried up – non FUNCTIONAL.
It was ERECTED placed there in its purpose to run water by the architectural design of it.
Fix these fountains – they are Historical and ENHANCE the Beauty that is Budapest, Hungary.

  2. Agree with Dominic Anthony.
Millions of forints being spent on renewing paving, cleaning up parks and planting of new trees the width & breath of Budapest, but we have numbers o beautiful fountains designed to incorporate the running of water – that just don’t FLOW.
Districts – get the “Pipe Men” out there and fix our fountains.
Budapest we should look at marketing the BEAUTY and History of our Fountains – after we get the WATER flowing.
    Tourists are ATTRACTED to fountains.
We living in regi posta utca 1052 – our fountain – Hermes Fountain – over 2 years taken out Removed due to the on-going construction of apartments.
    Water ran from it.
People drank the Water – wet their handkerchief’s to cool themselves from the running waters of our fountain, and it was a massive meeting point for PEOPLE.
Fountains – are a LIVING part of a City.
Ponder think about Budapest Councils – that EXPRESSION.
