Traffic changes this weekend: a Budapest bridge is being dismantled

The works in one of Budapest’s busiest places will be carried out on Saturday and Sunday. However, the necessary traffic engineering will be installed from Friday. Everyone should prepare for traffic changes: not only motorists, but also public transport users.

The Budapest Transport Centre (BKK) has announced that there will be traffic restrictions at the Népliget flyover, and two girders of the bridge will be lifted.

The works will take place on Saturday and Sunday, 6 and 7 May. The necessary traffic technology will be installed from Friday, napi.hu reports. Moreover, from Saturday, the section of the inner traffic lane leading to the city centre will be closed in front of the mint on Üllői út for the duration of the lifting work.

Traffic changes for motorists

On-site and laboratory tests are carried out on the samples selected and on the structural elements revealed, with the involvement of experts. When lifting the girders, the necessary space for lifting cranes and vehicles carrying the girders is provided by lane closures.

• Traffic is allowed to travel in one lane with a speed limit alongside the work area.
• On Könyves Kálmán Boulevard from southbound direction, it will not be possible to turn left from the inner lane onto Üllői Street.
• The parking areas under the flyover will remain closed.
• The current traffic order on the flyover will not change.

Changes for public transport users

The stop of the 83 trolleybus will be temporarily moved to Könyves Kálmán Boulevard, expected from 5:00 PM on Friday until the start of operations on Monday.

Investigations to assess the technical condition of the Népliget flyover started at the end of February, and a temporary traffic order has been put in place. Currently, one lane is available on the flyover in the direction of the city centre and two lanes are unchanged in the direction out of the city centre.

Weight limit

It is still safe to drive on the flyover, taking into account the weight restriction in force: vehicles heavier than 12 tonnes are not allowed to drive over the flyover. Meanwhile, for buses operated by BKK, the restriction applies to vehicles heavier than 19 tonnes.
