Hungarian DefMin: We are ‘alone in EU’ to urge ceasefire
Hungary is “the only European Union member to demand an immediate ceasefire and peace negotiations”, the defence minister said in a Facebook video concerning the war in Ukraine, uploaded on Wednesday.
Speaking on the sidelines of a meeting of EU defence ministers in Toledo, Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky said the EU was “putting an enormous pressure on Hungary . to grant its approval to spending additional hundreds of millions of euros on weapons (to Ukraine)”.
“Hungary supports peace and stability at all levels and at every forum,” the minister said. He insisted that there was “no rapid military solution” to the war, but “EU countries would not change their position to continue fighting with weapons.”
Szalay-Bobrovniczky called Ukraine’s keeping Hungary’s OTP bank on a list of war sponsors “unacceptable” and said “as long as it stays like that, Hungary will not have further negotiations” concerning the proposed financial framework to Ukraine.

Szalay-Bobrovniczky displays par excellence the ability of Fidesz politicians to speak out of both sides of their mouths. He demands immediate peace negotiations (which Putin won’t enter into) and at the same time says “Hungary will not have further negotiations” concerning the proposed financial framework for Ukraine. It is a non-stop Fidesz clown show that is given to us.
So. We are right, everyone else is wrong. What are the chances? Betting odds?
This flies in the face of reality. Demand peace but on what terms that are acceptable to both sides? It’s obvious that the 2 sides are miles away from an agreement. Is the HU position that UA should just roll over and accept the grabbing of territory? What message does that convey the next time Russia (or some other state) wants to take more territory? Or perhaps believes that RU will just leave (quick note, they show no signs of that).
Sure it’s costly, but it comes with sovereignty. That UA are putting their soldiers in harms way, and we don’t have to – sounds like a sweet deal. Or perhaps this minister would rather just join the Russian form of government now and we can skip any bloodshed or treasure?
