Fidesz: Hungary and Canada are friends and allies
Canada and Hungary are friends and allies linked by their NATO membership and the sizeable Hungarian diaspora, the head of parliament’s foreign affairs committee said after a visit to Canada on Thursday.
Zsolt Németh headed the committee’s visit to Toronto and Ontario, where they attended events related to the month of Hungarian heritage launched on 1 October.
The two countries are also marking the 60th anniversary of diplomatic ties, Németh noted.
Németh also met the head of the Canadian Senate, the heads of the foreign committees of parliament and senate, and the deputy foreign minister. Talks touched on security policy, NATO, deepening defence cooperation and the defence industry, he said. Hungary is scheduled to buy a radar system from Canada, and the two countries have cooperated in pilot training, he added.
Regarding the war in Ukraine, Németh told his partners that Hungary promoted a diplomatic solution to the conflict. Hungary supports Ukraine’s territorial integrity and self-defence, but also emphasises the plight of Transcarpathian Hungarians, he said. Ukraine must restore their rights, he added.
