It looks like the family programs that Hungarian government are so proud about are not working. Maybe “Family 2.0” will have more luck. That or the fact these programs are a scam and making Hungarian government richer and richer
The number of births is the interesting statistic. 2020 and 2021 saw a mini birth boom with the Total Fertility Rate rising from 1.5 to 1.6. That mini boom was short-lived and the 2023 numbers are a record low (down over 8% from the 2021 number), with the TFR down to 1.5 again. So currently there’s pretty much no evidence that Viktor’s family friendly programs are actually producing any more babies. Anyway these are long term plans, so we all await future birth numbers with interest.
News says that this was the lowest birth rate ever so I disagree with Nigel, there is nothing to wait for as this is the long term result.
And I am not suprised. When maternity wards lack funding and public hospitals in general are in horrtific state and schools lack certified teachers, who would risk it to have a child? Well, the rich and well off couples for sure, but for average Hungarian citizens its a real question – do I have the money to give birth in a safe environment and provide oppotunities for my child? If my child gets ill, will there be good care? Will my child receive good education? Unfortunately for many, the answers are no, thanks Fidesz ruling.
