The energy ministry said on Monday that the gas volume in Hungary’s storage facilities is 90 percent, exceeding the ratio required by the European Union.
Under a 2022 EU decree, member states were required to fill up their underground gas storages to 80 percent before the start of the heating season, the ministry said in a statement. The target ratio to be fulfilled by Nov 1 increased last year to 90 percent. For Hungary, the EU set a ratio of 86 percent by Sept 1 which the country met already in mid-August.
The ministry said the around 5.8 billion cubic metres of gas in Hungary’s storage facilities already exceeds the gas consumption needs of households and economic players recorded during last year’s heating season. Hungary’s gas storage level continues to be more than double the EU average.
