What happened? Hungarian greens leave European Greens
Hungary’s opposition LMP on Wednesday said it is quitting the European Green Party (EGP) over the “serious differences” that have arisen recently between the two sides in connection with the issues of electromobility and electric battery production.
LMP said in a statement that the policies of “the EGP ruled by western European Greens” were limited to “the green transition according to the interests of the core member states”.
The party said it wanted to protect Hungarian farmland and water resources and the living environment of the Hungarian people. But recently, it added, it had become clear that it had a better chance of accomplishing this outside the EGP than as a member.
LMP said it was not ditching green policies in general but rather the specific green policies that wanted to see all the benefits of the green transition go to western Europe, and all the pollution that came with it to the central and eastern European region.
