Hévíz thermal lake’s iconic bathhouse closed indefinitely, but a new 5-star hotel just opened!

Hévíz, one of Hungary’s most iconic spa destinations, is currently facing a bittersweet moment. While the town’s famous thermal lake bathhouse has been shut down due to structural concerns, Hévíz has also welcomed the opening of the country’s largest premium spa hotel, offering visitors a new way to relax and recharge.
Structural issues force closure of lakeside bathhouse
The central bathhouse located directly on Hévíz’s thermal lake has been closed to the public due to concerns about its structural safety, Telex reported. According to the St. Andrew Rheumatology Hospital and Spa, which operates the facility, a recent expert assessment concluded that the building can no longer safely accommodate guests.

Although the lakeside bathhouse is now off-limits, other spa and therapeutic facilities in Hévíz remain open. Officials say preparations for the building’s renovation will take considerable time, and a temporary architectural solution called “Szigetfürdő” (Island Bath) is in the works. This project is still undergoing technical, environmental, and nature conservation review.
The bathhouse was last renovated in 2005, using state-of-the-art techniques at the time. However, its unique architecture and wooden structure required continuous monitoring. While no significant changes were initially detected, a 2023 assessment revealed the need for more in-depth analysis, including 3D modelling, acoustic radar studies, and wood material testing. In early 2025, it became clear that the building could no longer serve its original function. As a result, the iconic bathhouse was officially closed to visitors on 18 March 2025.
