Stronger than ever: Hungary sees gains for ethnic communities in the region

Ethnic Hungarian representation has not weakened but has become stronger in the Carpathian Basin over the past year, the state secretary in charge of ethnic Hungarian communities said on Friday.

Lőrinc Nacsa said after a conference on ethnic policies in the Carpathian Basin held in Rijeka (Fiume), in Croatia, that the annual forum had been attended by top officials of the secretariat in charge of ethnic Hungarian communities abroad and ethnic Hungarian party leaders from outside Hungary. They had assessed the recent period and made preparations for the challenges of the upcoming period, he added.

Nacsa said that the conference dubbed “After Elections, Before Elections” had focused on elections in the recent period, with European parliamentary elections, parliamentary elections, local elections, and presidential elections having been held in the countries in question recently.

Nacsa said it was welcome news that Hungarian representation had become stronger in the Carpathian basin, including at the level of local government and parliament. The advance of anti-Hungarian powers had been successfully prevented in Romania, which secured the basic conditions of development by the Hungarian community, he added.
