Orbán cabinet’s unorthodox method to help Hungarians living in Ukraine: Ukrainian language courses

The government is launching support for language courses in Transcarpathia that aid communication between the Hungarian and Ukrainian native-speaking population, a government official said on Tuesday.
The state secretariat for nation policy is launching the programme together with the II Rákóczi Ferenc Transcarpathian Hungarian College with the aim of helping the coexistence of languages and cultures in an inclusive way, Lőrinc Nacsa, the state secretary for nation policy at the Prime Minister’s Office, said in a statement.
Applicants for the István Kotyuk language course will be able to take part in foreign language training in Hungarian and Ukrainian, with fully 72 teachers at their disposal. Hungarian as a foreign language will be taught in 50 settlements and Ukrainian as a foreign language in 7 settlements between August 2025 and July 30, 2026, the statement added.
The scheme serves to promote understanding between different ethnicities as well as providing jobs for more than 70 teachers who can remain in their homeland, Nacsa said. Language barrier-relief courses especially help public sector employees such as teachers as well as those in health care and public administration, he added.
