Stunning PHOTOS and VIDEOS of the recent eruption of Mount Etna

A fresh eruption of Mount Etna sent spectacular orange lava cascading down the slopes of the 3,403 metres high stratovolcano on the eastern coast of Sicily. Etna is Europe’s largest and highest active volcano.

According to the Turkish Anadolu News Agency, the lava is fed by an effusive fracture that opened at 3,000 metres on 10 August, located between the Bocca Nuova and South-East craters, and resumed activity on 14 August. The most advanced lava front has climbed to about 2,700 metres, while explosive activity continues with varying intensity from the Southeast Crater, sending ash into the summit area, while the aviation alert remains at orange level.

Since 1900, Mount Etna has been almost continuously active, displaying eruptive behaviour during 121 out of 126 years as of today. The current eruption period began in 2013 and is still ongoing. Thankfully, Etna’s eruptions typically feature low-level volcanic activity, such as ash plumes, lava fountaining, and Strombolian explosions (mild blasts of magma).
