Extraordinary parliament session collapses after Fidesz no-show

An extraordinary meeting of the Hungarian parliament, convened at the request of opposition parties to discuss the difficulties experienced by forex loan-holders, lacked a quorum and lasted less than 45 minutes on Monday, with 41 out of 199 lawmakers submitting their votes on the agenda.

Opposition Párbeszéd lawmaker András Jámbor criticised ruling party lawmakers for staying away, saying that the issue of forex loans affected hundreds of thousands of Hungarians.

László Toroczkai of Mi Hazánk said the reason Fidesz lawmakers had boycotted the session was because they were against a just settlement, adding that unless the issue were resolved, Hungary would have “no future”.

Dániel Z Kárpáti of Jobbik said the party planned to organise a demonstration dubbed “forex justice day” in the autumn.
