In the early hours of Sunday, a tragic fire broke out in Budapest’s 15th District, Rákospalota, claiming the lives of two people. The emergency call was received by the Budapest Disaster Management Authority at 2:17 AM on 31 August, reporting a fire on the sixth floor of an apartment building on Csobogós Street.

Two killed in 15th District apartment fire

Firefighters quickly arrived at the scene and began extinguishing the flames. According to the police, one woman fell from the sixth-floor apartment during the incident, and another woman’s body was later found inside the burned unit.

As a safety precaution, residents of the upper floors were ordered to remain inside their smoke-filled apartments until the building could be ventilated, Telex reported. The fire was fueled by accumulated trash and personal items within the apartment, and most of the damage was contained to that single unit.

Investigation underway, no signs of foul play

Budapest police have launched a criminal investigation on suspicion of public endangerment, while administrative proceedings are ongoing regarding the deaths. Authorities said there is currently no indication of foul play, such as homicide, in connection to the fatalities. However, they are still investigating the fire’s origin to determine if a crime was committed.

Officials stressed the heightened risks posed by hoarded objects and improperly handled trash in apartment buildings, especially for residents of upper floors, who face greater challenges escaping during an emergency. Due to the rapid spread of fires and smoke accumulation, the role of firefighters remains crucial to ensuring residents’ safety.

The on-site investigation and fire inspections are ongoing. Authorities have pledged to keep residents and the public informed as new information emerges.
