Düsseldorf-Budapest Eurowings flight forced to land in Vienna

A Eurowings flight travelling from Düsseldorf to Budapest was forced to make an emergency landing in Vienna after declaring a general distress signal mid-flight.

According to the Tudásmorzsák a repülésről (“Knowledge crumbs about aviation”) Facebook page, the Airbus A320 aircraft encountered an issue while flying through Austrian airspace. The crew responded by setting the internationally recognised 7700 squawk code, which indicates a general emergency situation onboard.

Rapid descent before unscheduled landing

Following the distress signal, the aircraft reportedly initiated a rapid descent before safely landing in Vienna. No official explanation has yet been provided regarding the nature of the emergency.

The incident was first highlighted by said Hungarian aviation-focused Facebook page, which confirmed both the emergency code and the unexpected diversion.

Possible medical emergency hinted

While authorities and the airline have yet to confirm details, a commenter claiming to have been present at the airport suggested that the situation may have involved a medical emergency on board.

Such cases are not uncommon in commercial aviation, where flights are occasionally diverted to the nearest suitable airport to ensure passengers or crew receive urgent medical attention.

Awaiting Eurowings’ official statement

At the time of writing, Eurowings has not released an official statement clarifying the reason behind the emergency landing. Further updates are expected once more information becomes available.

Despite the alarming nature of the incident, the aircraft landed safely, and there have been no reports of injuries or further complications.
