Caritas Lebanon head to brief Catholic Bishops’ Conference on state of refugees
Budapest, May 31 (MTI) – Paul Karam, the director of Caritas Lebanon, arrived in Hungary on Tuesday to brief the Hungarian Catholic Bishops’ Conference (MKPK) on the state of refugees in Lebanon and the work carried out by Christian churches there.
Karam was invited by Cardinal Péter Erdő, Archbishop of Esztergom-Budapest.
Erdo told MTI that over the past two years, more than 1.5 million refugees arrived in Lebanon — a country with a population of 4.8 million — from Iraq and Syria. The refugees are waiting for a chance to return to their home countries, Erdo said, adding that European Catholics have a duty to help them.
The cardinal said Karam will participate in MKPK’s plenary session and meet leaders of Hungarian Catholic charity organisations.
Karam will on Thursday visit the refugee reception centre in Fot near Budapest. On Friday he will hold talks with the state secretary in charge of church, minority and civil society relations and with member organisations of the Charity Council.
