BREAKING: Hungary election 2026 – All votes counted as Tisza secures historic supermajority

Change language:
All votes cast in Hungary’s 12 April 2026 parliamentary elections have now been counted, with complete processing confirming a decisive and historic victory for the Tisza Party.
With 100% of ballots processed, including votes from abroad and transferred voters, the outcome is final. Turnout reached a record 79.56%, with nearly 6 million people (5,988,778) casting their ballots: the highest participation since the democratic transition.
The Tisza Party secured 53.18% of the party-list vote (3,385,890 votes), far ahead of Fidesz–KDNP on 38.61% (2,458,337 votes), while Mi Hazánk Mozgalom received 5.63% (358,372 votes). No other party crossed the parliamentary threshold.
A historic supermajority reshapes parliament
The results translate into a dramatic reshaping of Hungary’s 199-seat National Assembly.
- Tisza Party: 141 seats
- Fidesz–KDNP: 52 seats
- Mi Hazánk Mozgalom: 6 seats
With 141 mandates, the Tisza Party has secured a two-thirds constitutional majority (well above the 133-seat threshold), marking the strongest electoral performance by any party since the regime change in 1989.

Tisza also dominated individual constituencies, winning 96 out of 106 districts, including several long-time Fidesz strongholds. By contrast, Fidesz managed to win just 10 constituencies, losing nearly 90% of those it held in 2022.
Compared to the previous parliamentary elections in 2022, the shift is stark. At that time, Fidesz held 135 seats, the united opposition 57 seats, Mi Hazánk Mozgalom 6 seats, and one mandate was won by an ethnic minority representative. In 2026, however, no minority list succeeded in gaining a seat.
Late votes boost Tisza’s lead further
Following the inclusion of votes from foreign missions and transferred voters, Tisza gained four additional mandates compared to the initial election night results.
Three constituencies flipped in Tisza’s favour after late-counted ballots, while an additional seat came from compensation votes. Political Capital notes that even without the electoral system’s “winner compensation” mechanism, Tisza would still have comfortably achieved a two-thirds majority.

Péter Magyar: “Unprecedented mandate and responsibility”
Reacting to the final results, Tisza leader Péter Magyar described the outcome as both a historic opportunity and a major responsibility.
“So far unseen majority, so far unseen mandate, and at the same time responsibility,” he wrote, adding that work is already underway to form a government by mid-May that is “worthy of voters’ trust”.
Magyar has also indicated that he aims to avoid a prolonged transition period, pushing for a swift formation of the new government once parliament convenes.
Dispute over contested constituency
Despite the landslide victory, Magyar has challenged the result in one constituency centred on Sárvár, where a narrow Fidesz win has raised allegations of electoral fraud.
Magyar claims that the presence of an independent candidate with the same name (Péter Magyar) may have misled voters and influenced the outcome. Authorities are reportedly investigating irregularities related to candidate nominations.

What happens next?
Hungary’s National Election Committee is expected to formally certify the final results by 4 May. The new parliament is likely to hold its inaugural session on 7 or 8 May, where Péter Magyar could be officially elected prime minister.
If timelines proceed as planned, ministerial hearings could begin shortly thereafter, paving the way for a new government to take office by mid-May.
With a commanding parliamentary majority and record voter backing, the Tisza Party now faces the challenge of translating its unprecedented mandate into governance.

Winning by such a huge margin actually makes things much much more difficult for Magyar, because, not only will the expectations on him be much, to the point of being unreasonable, but, because he has no effective parliamentary opposition, in numbers, he will have nowhere to hide, if things are not much better, in 2030.
In essence, Hungary has voted to make Magyar a 4 year dictator.
That is a lot on anyone’s shoulders.
Warranted or unwarranted, he has a lot of confidence in himself, because most of us would never consider ourselves to be qualified for such a position, much less want it.
More so, Magyar has never led any venture of his own, other than this campaign, so, again, his self-confidence rivals that of Donald J. Trump.
