Do Hungarian ambulances fail to reach even serious cases in time? Paramedics organisation outraged

Change language:
Paramedics in Hungary are in open revolt over an internal leadership instruction that exposes crippling capacity shortages in the national ambulance service, according to the Alliance of Hungarian Emergency Workers (MOMSZ). The group warns that such deficiencies could lead to life-threatening delays even in grave emergencies. The National Ambulance Service (OMSZ) insists it is merely a misunderstanding.
Ambulances fail to reach even serious cases in time in Hungary?
The directive, issued by the OMSZ’s director for central Hungary, has inflamed tensions among frontline staff, reports hvg.hu. It stipulates that delays of up to eight minutes from the initial call—meaning ambulances may not dispatch until then—are permissible when rushing to perform resuscitation or treat patients suffering major haemorrhage, unstable circulation or breathing, or unconsciousness.
MOMSZ claims this amounts to an official admission of systemic capacity shortfalls across the service—a problem they have long highlighted, only for OMSZ bosses to bury their heads in the sand. In a blistering Facebook post, they declared: “We call on the unfit leadership of the National Ambulance Service to resign with immediate effect. It is the very least they can do.”
Misunderstanding, says the OMSZ
The OMSZ hit back, arguing that such a rule has long been in place but applies solely to mass casualty incidents on a specific patch, such as major accidents triggering a surge in calls. Reassuringly, they added, it was not invoked at all in 2025.
