Government to set up Cziffra György Roma cultural centre

Budapest (MTI) – The government has decided to set up a Roma educational and cultural centre in Budapest, the human resources ministry told MTI.

The government is committed to nurturing Roma culture, one form of which is establishing a centre where the minority’s cultural traditions can be presented in a world-class environment, the ministry said in a statement.

The centre in Tavaszmező street in the 8th district will be named after György Cziffra, an internationally acclaimed Hungarian-born pianist of Roma origin.

It will also serve educational purposes with classes teaching Roma languages and programmes organised for young audiences and children.

The Cziffra György Roma Educational and Cultural Centre will also have a mission of scouting talents, supporting Roma-related research programmes, organising exchange programmes and building international relations.
