Afghan people smuggler attacked police officers in Hungary

An Afghan people smuggler was charged over attack on police, after pelting officers with rocks alongside unidentified accomplices, the Central Investigative Chief Prosecutor’s Office informed MTI on Wednesday.
Afghan people smuggler attacked police officers
According to the statement, the Szeged Regional Investigative Prosecutor’s Office has charged the Afghan man with people smuggling, violence against a public official committed while armed, and a crime against transport safety.
The indictment alleges that the man and his unidentified associates, acting as an organised criminal group, facilitated the illegal entry of at least 59 migrants into Hungary on no fewer than eight occasions from March 2023 onwards, by crossing the border fence along the Serbia-Hungary frontier.
The perpetrators, who lived in tents near the Vojvodina side of the border, propped ladders against the fence to help the migrants over into the country. Those manning the ladders kept watch for police, soldiers and border hunters carrying out frontier protection duties, then obstructed their work once they arrived on the scene—by hurling rocks and sticks at the officers, their vehicles, and the cameras of the border security system.
Illegal money transfer network helped him
The accused received a pre-arranged fee from his principals for each crossing, and demanded further payment for providing routes, transport tariffs and other information to guide the migrants to their destination countries.
He reinvested part of his proceeds into the crimes, buying tents, clothing and food for a camp on the Serbian side of the border section used to rest migrants. The bulk of his profits he sent to his family in Afghanistan via an illegal money transfer network, to buy assets including cars and property.
The prosecutor’s office has requested that the court sentence the man—who is currently in custody—to 12 years’ imprisonment if he admits the charges, declare him ineligible for parole, and order his permanent deportation from Hungary, the statement said.
