Another historic low: never before have so few Hungarian children been born

The number of births in April fell by 14 percent, while deaths were down by 2.3 percent compared with the same month the previous year, according to Central Statistical Office (KSH) preliminary data.

Fully 5,323 children were born and 9,565 people died. Marriages declined by 5.4 percent, KSH said in a statement on Thursday. The natural population decline was 4,242 people, compared with 3,618 in April last year.

KSH data show that 3,488 couples tied the knot, down 200 compared with April 2024. In January-April, 23,301 children were born, 8.7 percent fewer than the same period the previous year.

The estimated total fertility rate per woman was 1.28, compared to 1.37 a year earlier. Fully 45,079 people died, 3.5 percent more than in the same period the previous year. Fully 10,101 couples got married, 6.1 percent fewer than the same period a year earlier.
