More than a century ago, on 28 May 1918, Azerbaijan, a secular nation with rich historical and cultural heritage, declared its independence in one of the most turbulent geopolitical spots in the world. Having established the first democratic parliamentary republic in the Muslim East, Azerbaijan was also first eastern country to grant women a right to vote, ahead of many western nations, as well as creating first opera and ballet in Muslim world.

Since then, Azerbaijan has undergone substantial political, economic, and social progress, thereby emerging as a prominent and influential actor within broader region. At present, Azerbaijan plays a significant role in promoting regional connectivity, energy security, transport cooperation, and intercultural dialogue. Owing to its strategic geographical location and proactive foreign policy, the country continues to make valuable contributions to stability and cooperation throughout Eurasia.

Relations between Azerbaijan and Hungary, based on true friendship, common values and constructive political dialogue, have steadily strengthened in recent years and reached the level of enhanced strategic partnership. The expansion of cooperation in the fields of energy, economy, education, and culture reflects the shared interests and the ever-growing ties between the two countries. In 2024, Hungary, with over 1 billion usd investments, became third largest foreign investor in Azerbaijan.

On the occasion of the 108th anniversary of Independence Day, the Embassy of Republic of Azerbaijan to Hungary is holding an official reception on 27 May, Wednesday, at Vadrózsa Etterem, Budapest.
