Lake Balaton defines the beauty of the Transdanubian region. The eclecticism of the region’s landscape, tranquil surroundings and wild meadows keep bringing millions of admiring tourists every year. Balaton area was traditionally deemed as a Mecca of SPA resorts across the whole Eastern Europe.
Hotels of the Transdanubian region are famously associated with the great service forthe reasonable prices. However, recent research (2014) has shown that Balaton region has not only become number one tourist destination, but also holds the leading position in real estate investments in Hungary. Successful businessmen or simply tourists with a great taste do not want to be just visitors, they want to own properties around the Balaton area.
During the past couple of years there was a visible transition: preferences have switched from cheaper landmarks (under 10 million Hungarian Forints) to more expensive ones; Ukrainian investors, who have occupied the leading positions in purchasing houses in the Western regions of Hungary for many years, are now giving the first place to the blooming businessmen from Switzerland and Belgium.
Aside from the Balaton’s finest resorts and wineries, foreign investors definitely have gradually built their interest in towns like Hevíz and Keszthely, as well as Vonyarcvashegy and Gyenesdias. Wealthy tourists and real estates moguls, who have experienced holiday retreats around the Lake Balaton in the past, are now bringing contemporary architects to build multi-million forint mansions to celebrate the elegance, beauty and purity of the region. Depending on the location and the time period of the building, a price tag of the house varies from 15 million forints up to 50 million forints. The cottages around Balaton celebrate the elegance of the previous eras with a little touch of the modern architectural trends. According to the owner of one of the real estate agencies in Balatonfüred, Hungarians are also his major buyers.
In 2013 demand on the properties around Balaton has been phenomenal, bringing a huge profit to the whole Western region of Hungary. Investors create new resorts adding to the growing list of aspiring hotels.
