These are the best Hungarian Faculties of Humanities in 2017
Eduline reports that business daily Heti Világgazdaság has compiled a list containing the best Faculties of Humanities in Hungary. Eötvös Loránd University is the first from the point of view of how well the students perform, while the University of Pécs is best as far as teachers are regarded.
It seems that, as far as the performance of students is concerned, Eötvös Loránd University’s Faculty of Humanities is the best, while the same institution’s Faculty of Education and Psychology is second on the list.
However, one of the most prestigious universities in the capital city does not occupy nor the first nor the second place as regards the competence and well-preparedness of the teaching staff. First is the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Pécs, while the University of Szeged’s Humanities Faculty is second from this approach.

What’s the basis of comparison?
The overall listings and the lists broken down to faculties are based on how well the students and teachers perform. The creators of these lists pay close attention to several factors, for example, how many students marked the given university as their first choice when applying, the average points of the students who got in, the percentage of students with a language diploma, how many of the enrolled students have participated in competitions during high school, the number and rate of the teaching staff with an academic degree, the number of students per teachers with academic degree, the number of teachers who are members of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.
Since there are different criteria, one cannot say that there is a ‘best’ or ‘worst’ institution overall. Universities, colleges should be ranked based on several relevant and measurable criteria.
There is a change, however, this year, compared to the previous rankings: there was a slight change in the weighting regarding the listing of teachers. HVG reminds readers that, since the higher education system is more flexible now, it is unclear as to how far the quality of teaching is influenced by the number of students per academic degree-teachers. Because of this, while using the same indicators, the weighting has been modified: compared to the previous 50% weighting of students per teachers, attention has been paid to the rate of teachers with an academic degree among the teaching staff, and compared to the rate of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences members.
