The body of a 42-year-old Hungarian woman was found on Tuesday morning in a closed hotel under renovation in Rimini, Italy, il Resto del Carlino reports.
The hotel is located in the seaside town of Miramare. Several police units have been dispatched to the scene. Initial investigations suggest that the woman may have been dead for some time, most likely as a result of an accident.
The body, already decomposing, was found in the basement of the hotel by workers starting renovation work, Telex reports, based on the Italian news portal. The previously closed building was occupied by homeless people, apparently including the woman.
The body was found in the basement at the bottom of the stairs, with the woman’s shoes, a bed and some personal belongings next to the stairs. Investigations suggest that the woman, who had a history of drug and prostitution-related offences in the area, may have slipped on the stairs, hit her head and was unable to call for help. The prosecution ordered an autopsy.
