Brutal rise in prices in Hungary: this could be the most expensive Christmas ever

Consumer prices rose 21.1 percent between October 2021 and October 2022, while food prices increased by 40 percent. The rise in prices also affects the Hungarian Christmas menu – never before have we had to pay so much.

Food has become more expensive

The price of eggs rose by 87.9 percent, bread by 81.4 percent and dairy products by 75.4 percent in a year. Not only basic foodstuffs but also the price of spices has gone up. The price of salt rose by 37 percent in a year, paprika by 24 percent and pepper by 15 percent in a year, according to pénzcentrum.hu.

Before the outbreak of the Russian-Ukrainian war, the price of salt was 158 forints per kilo, now it is 216 forints. The price of paprika has risen from HUF 5030 to HUF 6260 per kilo, an increase of 24 percent.

The most expensive foods

Based on data from the Hungarian Central Statistical Office (KSH), napi.hu has compiled a list of the most expensive products. Although spices also increased in price, they did not make it into the top 10 most expensive products.

The biggest increase in price was for brown bread, up 101.9 percent in a year. Butter with 80 percent fat (98.9 percent) and Trappista cheese (98.5 percent) also made it onto the podium.

However, the price of white bread, 20 percent sour cream and buns also rose by more than 90 percent.

With the price of basic foodstuffs so high, it is easy to say that we have never paid so much for a Christmas menu.
