Budapest–Cluj Napoca direct flight suspended: everything you need to know

Aeroexpress has suspended the direct flight between Budapest and Cluj-Napoca (Kolozsvár), which has been operating since autumn 2022.
According to the announcement, the reason for the suspension of the flight between the Hungarian capital and the capital of Transylvania (Erdély), which has been operating since September 2022, is that the opening of the Schengen border in January has significantly changed the saturation of flights, which currently does not allow the unchanged operation of the flight. The good news is that the airline is not completely ruling out the resumption of the service and is aiming to resume the service in a renewed form as soon as possible.
Aeroexpress Regional launched its service between Cluj-Napoca and Budapest in September 2022, and has been operating it three times a week on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The Romanian airline AirConnect also operated flights to the Hungarian capital from March 2023, but suspended them after 5 months.
One thing is for sure, there will be no direct flights between Cluj-Napoca and Budapest in the near future, although direct flights between the two cities have been an attractive alternative for Hungarians from Transylvania travelling to the Hungarian capital, especially since the modernisation of the railway line between Cluj-Napoca and the Romanian-Hungarian border. It was also a good opportunity for Transylvanian residents to access another large nearby airport in the region, from where they could transfer to another connection.
The general public seems forced to use alternative routes for international trains, adding several hours to the already considerable journey time. However, an interesting twist will be when the new railway line is inaugurated, which is expected to be much shorter than the original journey time.
As we wrote last week, Wizz Air is to launch the Budapest-Mumbai flight and it’s planned the Budapest-New Delhi direct flight, details HERE.
