A direct and safe cycling link between Dunakeszi and Budapest is to be created, with the route soon connecting to the northern Pest section of the international EuroVelo 6 cycleway, Dávid Vitézy, the Minister for Transport and Investment, said on Facebook on Tuesday. That means cyclists will soon be able to pedal from Budapest to the Danube Bend.

He said that, following a government decision taken on August 7 at the ministry’s proposal, funding provided through the Integrated Transport Development Operational Programme Plus (IKOP Plus) would make it possible to build a safe and convenient cycling connection between the cycle path approaching from Dunakeszi and the asphalt-surfaced road previously constructed along the embankment, as well as between the embankment and Duna sor, MTI wrote.
“The Government is now providing funding for the construction of the two most urgently needed missing sections. This investment will finally create an uninterrupted link between the Danube Bend and Budapest,” he said.
EuroVelo extension
According to Mr Vitézy, the aim of the project is to establish a safe and fast connection as part of the EuroVelo 6 international route, linking the cycleway running through Vác and Szob all the way to the national border directly to Budapest’s inner cycling network. The development will extend the capital’s existing EuroVelo sections and complete the missing stretches along the Danube.
“Alternatives to the car bring social and environmental benefits: noise and air pollution are reduced, air quality improves and the capital’s congested roads become more liveable,” he said.
