Budapest to Lyon EasyJet flight makes emergency landing in Graz

An EasyJet passenger aircraft was forced to make an emergency landing at Graz Airport on Monday afternoon due to smoke detected in the cabin.

Emergency landing: Flight from Budapest to Lyon diverted to Graz

The aircraft was operating a scheduled flight from Budapest, Hungary, to Lyon, France, when smoke was reported on board. The crew quickly decided to divert and land at the nearest airport, which was Graz. The landing was carried out without further complications, and the 143 passengers and six crew members were safely evacuated, 5min.at said.

Major emergency response deployed

The incident triggered a large-scale emergency operation. A total of 21 fire departments and the Red Cross were dispatched to the scene. Emergency services responded swiftly, with 86 Red Cross personnel arriving in 18 ambulances, one emergency physician vehicle, one rescue helicopter (C12), and a command unit. Thankfully, no injuries were reported.

Cause of smoke still unknown

According to initial reports from authorities, the smoke appeared in the cockpit shortly before the emergency landing. The exact cause remains under investigation. All passengers and crew were checked immediately after landing, and no medical treatment was required.

Red Cross praises cooperation and quick response

In addition to the EasyJet flight, another small aircraft with four people on board also landed unexpectedly in Graz on the same day, also without incident. Andreas Krenn, the Red Cross operations leader, stated: “I’m proud of our team who responded with calm and professionalism, ensuring the safety and well-being of 149 people affected by the emergency landing. Our thanks go out to all emergency responders and partner organisations involved.”

After the emergency landing, the Red Cross declared the operation officially concluded at 5:10 PM.
