A souvenir shop in Bulgaria has caught attention with an unusual collection of mugs featuring notorious historical figures and authoritarian leaders – including North Korea’s Kim Jong Un, and for some reason, former Hungarian prime minister Viktor Orbán and current Hungarian prime minister Péter Magyar.

The A-Team of corruption, on mugs

The peculiar selection was spotted by a Hungarian tourist in Borovets, a popular mountain resort in Bulgaria’s Rila Mountains, known for its ski slopes and hiking trails. Alongside the usual tourist fare, such as fridge magnets and postcards, the shop displays an extensive collection of mugs featuring recognisable faces. The unusual range has even been placed prominently in the shop window, seemingly inviting curious tourists to take a closer look.

Among the figures featured are Kim Jong Un, Vladimir Putin, Lenin, Joseph Stalin and former Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceaușescu. The collection also ventures beyond political leaders, with mugs depicting notorious Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar and US President Donald Trump, writes 24.hu.

Hungarian faces among the collection

The most puzzling part of the collection for Hungarian visitors may be the appearance of Hungarian political figures. Viktor Orbán features on one of the mugs, displayed alongside Trump. Interestingly, his name is apparently rendered, or rather misspelled as “Victor” on the product. The collection appears to have been updated to reflect Hungary’s current political landscape as well, with a mug featuring Péter Magyar also reportedly available.

No connection to the country

Why the Bulgarian souvenir shop decided to include Hungarian politicians – and even Peppa Pig – among its World XI of bad guys of modern history remains unclear. There is no apparent Hungarian-themed connection to the resort, making their presence all the more unexpected. Maybe they just wanted their own share of the April elections, which was eyed by the world’s biggest media outlets as well.

But not every mug in the shop is political or controversial. Tourist favourites such as Peppa Pig and the crests of various football clubs are also reportedly available. For visitors looking for an ordinary Bulgarian souvenir, the shop therefore offers a rather unexpected alternative: a mug collection that ranges from cartoon characters to some of the most controversial figures of modern history.
