Bulgaria’s energy minister Stankov assures Hungary of Bulgaria’s transit reliability

Bulgaria plays a crucial role in securing Hungary’s natural gas supplies, and the foreign minister said on Tuesday that the country will remain a reliable transit partner for Hungary in the future.

The ministry cited Péter Szijjártó as saying after talks over the phone with the Bulgarian minister of energy affairs that “we greatly appreciate the current Bulgarian government’s responsible behaviour in the matter, and it is reassuring that the minister confirmed today that Bulgaria would remain a reliable transit partner for Hungary in the future”.

“We truly need this considering that more than 20 million cubic metres of natural gas arrives in Hungary through Bulgaria daily, and this year the volume transported through the TurkStream pipeline has exceeded 2.3 billion cubic metres,” he added.

Szijjártó said the natural gas pipeline capacity in southeast Europe needed to be significantly increased in order to enable central Europe to diversify energy supplies in this aspect also.

“My counterpart told me some great news because under the arrangements of the Vertical Gas Corridor project Bulgaria will significantly increase the capacity of the natural gas pipeline crossing the country,” he said.

“We were in agreement that the European Union must also take part in guaranteeing the region’s energy security, and for this purpose we will make our regional energy cooperation even tighter,” he added.
