Car drives into pedestrians in England, many injured

Change language:
Seven people were injured after a car drove into pedestrians in the central English city of Derby on Saturday night, in what police have described as an isolated incident not currently being treated as terrorism.
According to Derbyshire Constabulary, a 36-year-old local man was arrested just minutes after the incident, which took place in the city centre. The suspect allegedly drove a black Suzuki Swift into a group of pedestrians before fleeing the scene, MTI reported.
Arrest made within minutes
Speaking at a press conference on Sunday afternoon, Chief Inspector Emma Aldred said officers apprehended the suspect within seven minutes, still within the city centre.
The man, originally from India but a long-term resident of the UK, has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and remains in police custody. Authorities have not released further details about the suspect at this stage of the investigation.
Victims hospitalised, none in life-threatening condition
All seven injured victims were taken to hospital following the collision. Police confirmed that none of the injuries are believed to be life-threatening.

Counter-terrorism officers assisting inquiry
Although the investigation is being led by local detectives, specialists from Counter Terrorism Policing are also supporting the inquiry. Police stressed that such involvement is standard practice in incidents of this nature.
Officers are keeping an “open mind” regarding the motive, but emphasised that the presence of counter-terrorism experts does not mean the case is being treated as a terrorist attack.
Incident confined to Friar Gate
The collision occurred on Friar Gate, a main road in Derby’s historic city centre. The affected section remains closed and is expected to stay shut for an extended period while forensic investigations continue.
Investigators were still working at the scene on Sunday afternoon, collecting evidence and removing materials in sealed bags.
Police have reassured the public that the incident seems to be an isolated case and that there is no ongoing threat to the wider community.
