VIDEO, PHOTOS: Ronaldinho has arrived to Budapest!

Ronaldinho Budapest

The legendary Brazilian football player’s plane landed just hours earlier at Budapest’s Ferenc Liszt International Airport. He went to the downtown of the Hungarian capital, but before that, he greeted his Hungarians fans in Hungarian. Below, you may check out some photos and the video and find out why the Brazilian star is visiting Hungary. Furthermore, we will tell you where you can meet him tomorrow.

According to hvg.hu, Ronaldinho is in Hungary again. The former star of AC Milan, PSG and Barcelona and world champion of 2002 came because of the Budapest event of the Teqball Tour. He greeted the Hungarians in Hungarian, saying “Sziasztok, magyarok” (Hello, Hungarians) on a video shared by the Hungarian Teqball Association.

As we reported before, Teqball, founded by György Gattyán, Viktor Huszár and Gábor Borsányi, was officially introduced by Ronaldinho on 18 October 2016 in Budapest, followed by the first Teqball World Championship a year later in 2017, also in Budapest.

The Champions League winner Brazilian came to Budapest at the invitation of the FITEQ (International Teqball Federation/Nemzetközi Teqball Szövetség) to participate in the European Teqball Tour organised in Budapest between 29 September and 2 October. Ronaldinho is the ambassador of the new sport aspiring to become part of the Olympic Games soon.

After arriving in Budapest, Ronaldinho posted a video showing that his accommodation is close to the Danube on the Buda side of the capital. The Brazilian star probably learned about the Hungarian parliament and some other iconic buildings of Budapest because somebody is gesturing toward those on the recording.

Budapest Marathon expects 20,000 runners, 2,000 from abroad

Budapest Marathon

Some 20,000 runners are expected to participate in the 37th Spar Budapest Marathon, including 2,000 from abroad, to be held on the second weekend of October.

State secretary for an “Active Hungary”, Máriusz Révész, told a press conference on Tuesday that according to a survey some 59 percent of Hungarians never do exercise and an additional 15 percent exercise only rarely. No progress has been made in the area over the past four years, with Covid having had a negative effect, he added. Leisure sport events currently attract only around two-thirds as many participants as in pre-pandemic times, he said.

Director of the organiser Budapest Sport Office (BSI), Arpad Kocsis, said that over the two-day marathon participants can choose between 15 runs of various length, the first one starting at 9am on Saturday. The main marathon will start at 9am on Sunday along the riverbanks in Buda and Pest, he added.

International participants are now returning to the Budapest marathon, with registrations received from 83 countries, mostly from the UK and France. The oldest to have registered is an 82-year-old man from France, he added.

Hungary vs Italy UEFA Nations League

Marco Rossi’s side finished behind tonight’s victors in Group C of Nations League Division 1 after a superb goalkeeping performance from Gianluigi Donnarumma inspired visitors Italy to a 2-0 victory in Budapest tonight and therefore qualification as group winners for the final four next summer.

Before this last round of the Nations League group stage, Hungary were top with ten points from five matches with second-placed Italy on eight points, so the visitors needed to win here in Budapest to reach the final four of the tournament, while even a draw would have been enough for the hosts to win the group. Hungary lost 2-1 to Italy in Cesena in June, but since then had won away against England and Germany, so they entered this game in the Puskás Arena full of confidence, MLSZ said.

Hungary head coach Marco Rossi made only one change from Friday’s victorious lineup against Germany, Loic Nego replacing Dániel Gazdag in the attacking trio alongside Ádám Szalai and Dominik Szoboszlai, while behind them András Schäfer and Ádám Nagy lined up in the middle, Attila Fiola and Milos Kerkez played on the two wings, Ádám Lang, Willi Orbán and Attila Szalai comprised the defensive three and Péter Gulácsi in goal.

The match’s first opportunity came the home team’s way, Dominik Szoboszlai lining up a free kick from 22 metres in just the second minute, but his shot bounced off the wall. Italy then wasted several opportunities in a short time, Attila Szalai clearing the ball from under his own crossbar in the fifth minute. Much of the first half was dominated by the away side and they took a 27th-minute lead when Giacomo Raspadori took advantage of Ádám Nagy’s loose pass and scored from close range.

Federico Dimarco almost doubled Italy’s lead five minutes later, only for his rasping shot to fly just wide of Gulácsi’s left post, and then it was Hungary’s turn to threaten, Szoboszlai first seeing Orbán unable to convert his cross from a free-kick before the RB Leipzig playmaker tested Donnarumma himself with a shot that was well saved.

Both teams made a change at the half-time break, Callum Styles replacing Ádám Nagy in Hungary’s midfield and it very nearly paid early dividends when, in the 50th minute, Nego, Szoboszlai, Styles, and Ádám Szalai all shot at goal from various distances, but Donnarumma and his defenders somehow combined to deny the hosts. Rossi’s side would rue that profligacy just two minutes later when Dimarco finished off a slick move to hand his country a two-goal cushion.

Another two minutes later and Donnarumma again came to the fore to brilliantly repel Styles’ close-range header and the same player was denied in the 63rd minute when his shot deflected off an Italian defender, but Donnarumma produced yet another save. Hungary were clearly on top in this period of the game, regaining possession high up and keeping the opponent’s goal under pressure.

In the 75th minute, Ádám Szalai, making his final appearance in international football, was replaced by Ádám Martin but more fresh legs failed to break down a stoic and experienced Italy defence.

Italy, therefore, prevailed 2-0 and win the group by a single point, so they will progress to next summer’s Nations League semi-finals. Hungary finishes in second place with 10 points, ahead of both the German and English national teams. The year isn’t over yet though and Marco Rossi’s team still have two more fixtures in 2022, both in November when they’ll play away to Luxembourg and then at home to Greece.

Here is how Hungary’s men football team defeated Germany

Yet another inventive and courageous performance from Marco Rossi’s Hungary men resulted in a 1-0 victory against Germany in Leipzig on Friday evening, Ádám Szalai’s spectacular first-half goal proving enough to keep his side one point clear top of the Nations League Division 1 group with just a home fixture against Italy to come on Monday.

Captain Szalai inspires Hungary to victory in Germany

It was a largely familiar lineup that head coach Marco Rossi selected for this penultimate group-stage match in front of nearly 40,000 spectators in Germany, Péter Gulácsi in goal behind a back three of Ádám Lang, Willi Orbán and Attila Szalai with Attila Fiola at right wing-back and 18 year-old debutant Milos Kerkez on the left. András Schäfer, Ádám Nagy and Dániel Gazdag made up a three-man midfield with Szoboszlai supporting lone striker and team captain Ádám Szalai upfront.

First blood was drawn by the visitors when Szalai artfully used his right heel to flick Szoboszlai’s outswinging corner from the left into the far-right side of the German goal in the 17th minute. Gazdag and Germany’s Thomas Műller both saw efforts saved before the half-time whistle was blown. The second half was predictably characterised by German pressure, Müller seeing a goal disallowed and Timo Werner and Joshua Kimmich both being denied by Gulácsi. Hungary weren’t afraid to seek a second goal though, substitute Ádám Martin – on for his striking colleague Szalai – testing home-team goalkeeper Marc ter Stegen and the latter also proving equal to László Kleinheisler’s late effort.

There were to be no further changes to the scoreline though and thus Gulácsi, Orbán and Szoboszlai were able to celebrate a momentous victory in the stadium they play their club football in for RB Leipzig. The joy on every Hungarian face at the end was not only due this latest amazing triumph under Rossi, Hungary’s first in a competitive match against Gerany since 1954, but also because Italy’s win over England in Milan at the same time means that Hungary have secured their place in the top tier of the tournament’s next edition and can even finish top of this group if they avoid defeat against Italy in the Puskás Aréna on Monday. HERE you may watch the match highlights.

Marco Rossi: I’m grateful to the players

Hungary’s head coach spoke in particuarly glowing terms about Ádám Szalai, his striker and captain who will retire from international football next week.

The Hungarian national team produced yet another incredible feat this year, this time defeating Germany away from home and thereby securing their stay in the top tier of the Nations League.

In his post-match interview, Marco Rossi praised all of his players, but singled out Ádám Szalai who scored the winning goal.

We did a great job in the first half and then in the second half we were cornered by the Germans and had to defend very deep, even as the players tired. Ádám Szalai did a great defensive job; he occupied Kimmich for fifty minutes so that the German couldn’t put us in difficult situations with dangerous passes, and thanks to that, we were also able to conserve our strength more. With Ádám, exactly what I hoped for happened before the match. I told the players that the last two matches will remain in their memories for ever, so I want them to remember these matches for the right reasons. His goal here against Germany has made this farewell even more magnificent. Ádám is a player who, during his career, has been held in much higher esteem abroad than in Hungary. He deserves all the praise possible for his performance today – in addition to his goal, he did an amazing defensive job and sacrificed a lot for the sake of success,” Rossi explained.

A special match is now on the horizon for Marco Rossi, because Hungary can now win their Nations League group with victory or a draw against his home country, Italy.

Monday’s match against Italy will be a special match for me and I am happy that we have secured at least second place with this success. After five rounds, we have ten points, which no one expected of us beforehand, so I am very grateful to the players for their efforts,” Rossi added.

Marco Rossi, the head coach of the Hungarian football team, said before the match that it would be abnormal to win against the three-time world champion Germany. That is what happened in Leipzig today evening. Thanks to the victory, Hungary might have a chance to win the UEFA Nations League next spring. Here are the details.

A miraculous victory over Germany

According to index.hu, the German journalist reporting about the match said that the Nationalelf consists of world-class players. But as a team, they are not that good. However, everybody expected a Hungarian defeat today in Leipzig, even though Hungary played a draw with Germany in Budapest in July.

Marco Rossi, the head coach of the Hungarian team, called people’s expectations about a victory impossible. However, he added they would do their best to make the Hungarian fans proud. And the fans were very enthusiastic before the match. Check out some photos below of how they marched together to the stadium after arriving in Leipzig:

Szalai, the hero

The Hungarian goal was scored by midfielder Ádám Szalai in the 18th minute. Szalai announced this Monday that the match against Italy in the next UEFA Nations League on 26 September will be his last as a national team member. No one could wish for a better farewell from the fans and the team than scoring the winning goal in the last but one match. Here is Szalai’s goal:

Hungary’s victory might mean a lot. Since Italy defeated England, Hungary needs to defeat Italy next Monday to secure its place in the UEFA Nations League finals. However, there is a chance that the Hungarian football team might win an international football tournament after decades of annoying failures next spring.
What’s more, it is already certain that Hungary will continue in the A division in the next UEFA Nations League tournament. Here are some photos of the match:

Four consuls will help Hungarian football fans today in Leipzig, Germany

Hungarian football fans

Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó ordered four Hungarian consuls in Germany to accompany and aid Hungarian spectators arriving to watch the Hungary-Germany Champions League match in the city, the minister said.

Szijjártó said in a video that the consuls will be working within the Red Bull Arena during the match and will answer the phone to a Hungarian number throughout to help fans “who might get in trouble”, Szijjártó said. The Munich Consulate-General and the Berlin Embassy will be on 24-hour duty, he said.

The Hungarian national team will play the Nationalelf from 8.45pm on Friday.

In June 2021, German police detained 18 Hungarians on the day of a European championship qualifier between Hungary and Germany.

Before their Nations League match away against Germany, both Marco Rossi and András Schäfer discussed the retirement of Ádám Szalai, and the Union Berlin midfielder revealed that many of his club’s fans will be rooting for the Hungarian national team on Friday.

Hungary’s men’s national team arrived in Leipzig on Thursday afternoon and almost immediately the team’s official pre-match press conference took place, Rossi first being asked about the retirement of Ádám Szalai by waiting journalists:

“The situation regarding Ádám Szalai has always been a bit special. Everyone has a good relationship with our captain so it isn’t easy to say goodbye to him, but such is life. All our players want to give Ádám a nice farewell gift; a good game and a good result”.

After these two matches, the national team’s head coach admitted that his side had had much less time to prepare for two very difficult opponents than for their previous fixtures at the the start of the summer.

teqball ronaldinho

“We are missing several players, but we are not focusing on absentees, but on those who are with us. I feel that the few days we’ve had have been successful. Both Germany and Italy are aiming to win this group and their fate is still in their own hands. It will be tough for us, but we’re prepared. Our aim is always to come off the pitch having done everything we can to give a good performance. However, the team should not be expected to score points against Germany or Italy. A very difficult assignment awaits us on Friday in Leipzig and now I just want to focus on that; I don’t want to be updated about the scoreline in the England-Italy match being played at the same time”.

Marco Rossi also emphasised as well that the team has to keep its feet on the ground, and for him it would be a good result at the end of the group stage if Hungary could remain in division 1 of the Nations League: “In both matches, we want to show the best of ourselves and leave the pitch in such a way that our fans can be proud of us!”

Alongside Rossi was András Schäfer who scored against Germany at last summer’s European Championship, a memory which is of course still a particularly fond one for him.

“I’m very happy to come back to Germany, because almost my whole life has changed since I scored that goal in Munich at last summer’s Euros. With the retirement of Ádám Szalai, the team is losing a very valuable player and personality, but I don’t want to talk about him in a negative context, but rather I’d like to enjoy the last two matches with him,” Schäfer explained.

The Union Berlin midfielder also said that many of his club’s fans had told him that they would be supporting the Hungarian national team on Friday:

“It’s an advantage that I play in a higher-ranked league every week, but which league we are in is not so important from the point of view of this match, because a national team match is always different from a round of league fixtues. I don’t want to think about points calculations; staying in this division is our primary goal and if we succeed, then we can dream bigger,” Schäfer concluded.

The Germany squad:

Goalkeepers: Oliver Baumann (Hoffenheim), Marc-André ter Stegen (Barcelona), Kevin Trapp (Eintracht Frankfurt)

Defenders: Armel Bella-Kotchap (Southampton), Matthias Ginter (Freiburg), Robin Gosens (Internazionale), Thilo Kehrer (West Ham United), David Raum (RB Leipzig), Antonio Rüdiger (Real Madrid), Nico Schlotterbeck (Borussia Dortmund), Niklas Süle (Borussia Dortmund)

Midfielders: Maximilian Arnold (VfL Wolfsburg), Ilkay Gündogan (Manchester City), Kai Havertz (Chelsea), Joshua Kimmich (Bayern Munich), Jamal Musiala (Bayern Munich)

Forwards: Lukas Nmecha (Wolfsburg), Benjamin Henrichs (RB Leipzig), Leroy Sané (Bayern Munich), Timo Werner (RB Leipzig), Serge Gnabry (Bayern Munich), Jonas Hofmann (Borussia Mönchengladbach), Thomas Müller (Bayern Munich)

Slavko Vinčić of Slovenia will be the referee in this Nations League match, while his assistants will be Tomaž Klančnik and Andraž Kovačič. The fourth referee will be Nejc Kajtazovic and the video referee will be Matej Jug.

Ferencváros’ perfect UEFA Europa League start continues in Monaco

ferencváros hungary football club

Hungarian champions Ferencváros’ defeat to Qarabag in UEFA Champions League qualifying last month was seen as a catastrophe. The Budapest-based club defeated Dinamo Zagreb, Djurgårdens, Celtic, and Molde en route to the Champions League group stages back in 2020/21, and were hoping to repeat the feat this season. Those hopes were stopped in their tracks by Azerbaijan’s champions. However, Stanislav Cherchesov’s side are making amends in the Europa League instead. Online bookmakers such as 888Sport, which provides betting and free offers on European football, hadn’t tipped the Zöld Sasok to pull up any trees in the competition, but after two wins in as many matches, they currently sit atop of Group H.

After the group stage draw was made earlier this month, fans of Ferencváros could be forgiven for expecting a disappointing Europe campaign. They were drawn against two fellow champions, Red Star Belgrade and Turkish champions Trabzonspor. To make matters worse, they were also drawn against French giants AS Monaco. But things couldn’t have started any better.

The perfect start

On matchday one, the Hungarians were already on cloud nine. A first-half brace from Tokmac Nguen as well as Adam Traore’s strike gave the hosts a 3-1 lead at halftime over Trabzonspor. And despite the visitors pulling a goal back in the second half, it was Ferencváros who ran out worthy 3-2 winners. A bigger test was awaiting on the horizon though, with a trip to the French Riviera.

Matchday two brought about a trip to the principality of Monaco. Philippe Clement’s AS Monaco impressed in Ligue 1 last season. They held off a late charge from Rennes and Nice to secure third place in the French top flight and a spot in the Champions League qualifiers. They were stunned in qualifying for the second consecutive year, however, losing out 4-3 on aggregate to PSV Eindhoven.

They too made up for that disappointment in the Europa League though, winning 1-0 in the cauldron that is Red Star Belgrade’s Rajko Mitic Stadium. They were hoping to build on that at home to Ferencváros and entered the fixture as strong favorites. Despite dominating for long periods, however, the hosts couldn’t find the breakthrough. That opened the door for the visitors to steal all three points, and they did exactly that, with Hungarian midfielder Bálint Vécsei scoring the winner ten minutes from time.

Emerging technologies shaping the NFL

american-football nfl team sports

With recent technological advancements, more people have access to real-time games and sports leagues, making the NFL experience even more enjoyable. This has led to the rise in social media groups where sports fans interact with other NFL league fans.

The league has also capitalised on technology by broadcasting its games on non-traditional media and making the viewing experience more convenient. Mobile apps, in particular, improve the overall experience and keep sports followers informed about what’s happening in the league. In addition, thanks to technology such as the Zebra RFID, betters, sportsbooks, and coaches can better analyse players’ performance on the field, thus making informed decisions about their favourites.

This article seeks to explore the emerging technologies shaping the NFL.

Sideline Viewing Systems and Surface Tablets

Coaches relied on faxed images of defensive and offensive formations on the sidelines of the series. However, in 2015, the NFL started to track player movement with the Microsoft Surface Pro 3, a tablet with a stylus that allows coaches to gather valuable data about the players. This data offers the technical bench valuable information helpful in making tactical decisions on the game.

The tablets have a unique configuration that prevents anyone from altering information, the addition of more images on the screen and the option of adding multiple colours to represent different characters while scribbling. This game-changing technology has boosted both players’ and coaches’ confidence and morale for the game.

Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) Chips

The NFL has been using Zebra RFID (radio frequency identification) since the 2011-2012 season. The system uses a chip in players’ shoulder pads that captures real-time information, including the player’s distance, position, and speed. This unique feature enables game officials to monitor the game’s progress.

The data captured is useful in producing statistics on how a player is doing on the field compared to other players. Also, coaches can use it to determine what switches they need to make in the team for an upcoming match and the types of exercises that can boost a player’s physical performance.

NFL Helmet Technology

NFL has been dedicated to revolutionising how technology can be leveraged to eliminate injuries during the game. With that, it has awarded grants to software companies to design helmet technology that is safe for the player and useful for game officials.

This technology is used to make tailor-made helmets for players depending on their positions and biodata. They are fitted with state-of-the-art software that analyzes player impact during a game and reduces head impact exposure (HIE). Some NFL helmet technology in the market can analyze HIE and compare it with their database of player reports. This information is salvaged and used to make better helmets for NFL players.

Live Streaming

The NFL uses live broadcasts for every game, which makes it possible for fans, clubs, players, and other stakeholders to stream the games from the federations. In addition, thanks to various streaming options, users have multiple ways to catch up with the NFL games.

You can stream the current NFL season games from your set-box, phone, or laptop. And if you’re a local game fan, you can access them on your downloaded streaming app. With a good internet connection, you can get the latest NFL spreads, best bets, lines, odds, picks and predictions for your favorite team.

In the US, you can stream games from various channels such as Amazon Prime Video, ESPN, FOX, CBS, NBC, and the NFL network. For tablets and smartphones, you can stream the season’s games on NFL plus, which allows you to watch the game at a fee. Fubo TV and Sling TV are excellent choices if you’re looking to cut costs.

The NFL Game pass allows you to stream the games after the end of the game. Additionally, you can watch various preseason games, view condensed games within a short time or listen to radio broadcasts.

You can watch the NFL games live with services like Tablo or Channel Master if you have a good TV antenna. Also, with a set box, you can watch recorded games after the game ends.

Conclusion

The NFL is one of the most popular sports leagues in the United States, and fans, players, and coaches are always looking for new ways to join the excitement. So, the NFL is devoting resources to developing new technologies to improve player performance. But, as the NFL continues to grow in popularity, so does the need to keep abreast with the most innovative technology.

Looking back on Péter Gogolák’s unique NFL Career

gogolál nfl

Former AFL All-Star and NFL kicker Péter Gogolák may not be enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, but he certainly pieced together one of the more fascinating careers.

Gogolák was born 80 years ago in Budapest, Hungary. He was one of the first professional American football players born outside of the U.S. Gogolák, who starred in soccer at a young age, caught the attention of the Buffalo Bills (then an AFL team) and was drafted in the 12th round (92nd overall) in 1964.

Gogolák became a household name because of his soccer-style field goal kicks. While every NFL kicker uses Gogolák’s style today, kickers in pro football did things quite differently during his early playing days. The two-time AFL All-Star played for the Bills from 1964 to ‘65 before joining the New York Giants of the National Football League in 1966. He would spend the rest of his career there, retiring after the 1974 campaign.

With mobile/online sports betting in New York launching back in January, today we can find sportsbooks like BetMGM NY which offer bonus codes to new customers as well as rewards through their loyalty program. At BetMGM NY, customers can place a variety of different bets, including parlays, over/under, props and futures.

The Giants and Bills, the two only teams Gogolák played for professionally, are on the opposite side of the spectrum heading into the 2022 season. The G-Men are widely expected to be among football’s worst teams in 2022, while the Bills are the Super Bowl 57 favorites at multiple sportsbooks.

It’s quite fitting that Gogolák’s two former pro football teams met in Super Bowl 25 in Tampa Bay, Florida 31 years ago. That game, of course, came down to Scott Norwood’s 47-yard attempt for the Bills. Norwood missed it wide right, and the G-Men barely held on for a low-scoring 20-19 victory.

Gogolák was instrumental in leading the Bills to their only championships in franchise history, helping the organization win back-to-back AFL titles in 1964 and 1965. Buffalo defeated the San Diego (now Los Angeles) Chargers in both championship games.

Ushering A Golden Era Of Kickers

As pointed out in Doug Williams’ 2016 article published at ESPN, all 32 NFL teams “had a soccer-style kicker” by the year 1987.

Williams’ ESPN article also noted that Washington Commanders legend Mark Moseley was the last kicker who used the straight-on style.

In today’s era, you see kickers run up from an angle (like soccer players when they attempt penalty and free kicks) upon kicking the football. Moseley, the 1982 league MVP, simply stood behind the holder of the football and then walked up slowly to kick at it. That’s how it was done then, but it looks totally unorthodox when you watch it today.

Kickers weren’t as reliable and accurate in the ‘60s, ‘70s or even the ‘80s as they are today. To put it into comparison, Jan Stenerud is a Hall of Famer who played from 1967 to ‘85. His field goal percentage of 66.8, isn’t even among the top 110 all-time.

Gogolák himself made 58.8 percent of field goals throughout his 11-year career. Again, those were good enough numbers for a kicker in his day. Current Baltimore Ravens kicker Justin Tucker is the most accurate field goal kicker ever with a percentage of 91.061 through the 2021 season.

In fact, the eight best kickers ever in terms of field goal percentage are all active: Tucker, Harrison Butker (Kansas City Chiefs, 90.13 percent), Younghoe Koo (Atlanta Falcons, 90.0 percent), Chris Boswell (Pittsburgh Steelers, 88.35 percent), Daniel Carlson (Las Vegas Raiders, 87.2 percent), Josh Lambo (free agent, 87.075 percent), Robbie Gould (San Francisco 49ers, 86.598 percent) and Wil Lutz (New Orleans Saints, 86.585 percent).

In today’s NFL, teams simply need a kicker who’s making at least north of 80 percent of field goal attempts. That’s easier said than done, as several teams in any given season go through multiple kickers a year.

But at the end of the day, it was Gogolák’s soccer-style way of kicking that changed the NFL forever. It made things all the more easy for kickers of future generations, and the kickers of today owe him one big “thank you.”

The best Hungarian chess player continues in Romanian colours

rapport richard hungary

On Sunday, the Romanian Chess Federation announced that the best Hungarian player, the 13th-ranked Richárd Rapport, will continue his career in Romanian colours.

Rapport was born and raised in Sé, near Szombathely, Hungary. His father was his main patron, who supported him and his racing with a nine-figure sum, while the Hungarian federation was not really able to help Rapport to reach his full potential in the last ten years. However, he has been approached by several countries recently because of his virtuoso and adventurous style.

At the end of May, the Romanians made the Hungarian chess player an offer he could not refuse, and he reached the final of the World Eights in Madrid this year, where he finished eighth after a good start. Rapport accepted the offer, but when the Hungarian federation responded by trying to keep him at home, it was too late. The state secretary for sport, Ádám Schmidt, who was appointed in June, also tried to help resolve the matter, but the process could not be reversed.

The Romanian federation had already started the transfer procedure for Richard Rapport and his wife, Serbian Jovana Rapport. Jovana has already played for Romania at the European Women’s Championships.

At the time, the federation’s president Vlad Ardeleanu wrote on social media that it was an honour and a pleasure for them to have an excellent chess player like Richárd Rapport, who was ranked fifth in the world at the time, representing Romania. He added that they wanted to integrate him into the Romanian team as soon as possible so that together they could achieve excellent results. Ardeleanu also said that they wanted to continue to maintain good professional relations with the Hungarian and Serbian federations. The MSSZ had earlier protested against the “change of flag” of Richard Rapport and said it would do its utmost to ensure that the grandmaster would continue to compete in Hungarian colours.

It came to the point that two of the members of the board of the Hungarian Chess Federation resigned because of the handling of the Rapport case.

László Szabó, the president of the national federation for three and a half years, took the flag for the Chess Olympiad in India in July, with Budapest hosting the next event in 2024. Rapport has not even played in Chennai, which is not surprising – after finishing runner-up at the 2014 Olympics, he was part of the Hungarian national team in 2016, but not after that. Rapport’s change of country is a sensitive loss, as it would be a bravo for the Hungarian team to finish in the top ten at their home Olympics.

According to press reports, the main sponsor of the 2022 Superbet Chess Classic Romania, Sacha Dragic, the Serbian-born billionaire owner of the Superbet company, has made Rapport an irresistible sponsorship offer that would give him a real chance of winning the world title in the coming years.

Hungary Men to play important match on same day as World Cup kick-off

Marco Rossi’s men’s national team will play its last home match of the year on 20 November against Greece in the Puskás Arena, three days after travelling to Luxembourg for another friendly match.

The Hungarian national team will close the year of 2022 against teams in the C league of the Nations League. Our first opponent, Luxembourg, are currently second in their group behind Turkey, ahead of the Faroe Islands and Lithuania. Several footballers from the Luxembourg national team play in the German Bundesliga, but there are also players from Spartak Moscow and the Dutch league too.

The last time the two countries played was on November 2017, also in Luxembourg. It wasn’t a good day for us, a 2-1 loss with Nemanja Nikolic scoring our only goal. From the team at that time, which was managed by Zoltán Szélesi as interim head coach, today only Ádám Nagy and Roland Sallai are still in the setup. Luc Holtz, Luxembourg’s head coach, has been in charge since August 2010 and he is due to lead his team in their 12th match against Hungary, the current record standing at 10 wins for Hungary until that most recent encounter.

The last time we faced Greece was four years ago, when they were one of our ’C’ League group opponents in the first edition of the Nations League. By that time in autumn 2018, Marco Rossi was already in charge of the national team which won 2-1 at home with goals from Roland Sallai and László Kleinheisler, a month before losing 1-0 in Greece in October. Despite the defeat, Rossi was for a long time of the opinion that that latter match was the best his team had played under him. It is interesting to note that Hungary and Greece were drawn in the same group in the qualifiers for both the 2008 and 2016 European Championships.

Greece currently top their group in League ‘C’ of the Nations League, with two matches to go before the end of the initial stages, a six-point lead meaning they are comfortably ahead in a group which also includes Kosovo, Northern Ireland and Cyprus. Most of their players play in the English, German, Dutch, Turkish and Greek leagues, which means it will be a tough task for Hungary to improve their record against them, one which currently stands at five wins and six draws from 21 matches.

“Our team is able to spend such little time together each yeat, since the club calendar is so busy both at domestically and in European competition, so every extra day spent together is of particular importance. From this point of view, the unity in November will also be important, and it will provide an excellent opportunity to take a look at those young players who have been knocking on the door of the full men’s team for some time – if they continue to work and perform properly, they can soon be regular members of the squad. We want to see what they are capable of and where they are internationally when playing against other adult national teams”, Marco Rossi told mlsz.hu.

Sunday 20 November, 2022

Hungary v Greece in the Puskás Arena

The match on 20 November coincides with the first day of the 2022 FIFA World Cup. It is permissable to organise friendly matches on the day of the opening match of the World Cup because FIFA only recently brought the first match of the World Cup forward one day earlier.

Hungarian FM praises Hungarian football achievements

Thanks to hard work and resilience, Hungarian football is again cause for pride, Foreign Minister Péter Szijjárto said on Thursday, marking the 25th death anniversary of Olympic gold medalist football player Zoltán Czibor.

Czibor (1929-1997) played in Hungary’s legendary Golden Team and won and Olympic gold, World Cup silver and European Cup gold with them. He emigrated in 1956.

The foreign ministry’s statement cited Szijjártó as saying that the “football geniuses forced into exile by the Communist regime … had a large role in making the Hungarian nation well-known and well-loved worldwide.”

In recent times, “Hungary’s national team has become a national cause again”, thanks to the government’s hard work and “defying the opposition,” he said. The past three years have seen the completion of a cutting-edge stadium, the Puskás Arena in Budapest, and “excellent” achievements in reaching the European Championship and the Nations League, he added.

Budapest-Balaton bike path completed

Balaton bike tour

A stretch of the Budapest-Balaton (BUBA) cycle path, between Szekesfehervar and Balatonakarattya, was inaugurated on Friday, completing the route between the capital and the “Hungarian sea”.

Máriusz Révész, state secretary for an active Hungary, noted that the first stretch of the BUBA cycle path, between the capital and Etyek, was completed in June, and the second stretch, between Etyek and Lake Velence, was finished in July. BUBA is part of the EuroVelo 14 cycle path which runs between Lake Constance and Debrecen, in eastern Hungary.

Hungary’s government has spent an annual 10 billion-12 billion forints (EUR 24m-29m), on top of European Union funding, on cycle path developments since 2018, government spokesperson Alexandra Szentkiralyi said, pointing to the positive impact of such investments on the entire tourism sector.

BUBA is 108km long. The stretch inaugurated on Friday is a little over 27km.

Hungary tops the medal table at the Canoe Sprint European Championships Munich 2022

European Kayak Canoe Championships hungary gold medal

After four days of the competition in Munich the Canoe Sprint and Paracanoe European Championships Munich 2022 has come to an end. The best nations of the last season were excelling also on the Olympic Regatta Course in Munich. Hungary concluded the European Championships on the first place in medal standings, with a total of 17 medals. Germany was second with 16 and Spain third with a total of 15 medals, European Canoe Association said.

On the last day of the European Championships Munich 2022 fifteen canoe sprint finals were on the programme. Hungary, Poland and Spain were among those who were the most satisfied after the last competition day.

Hungary started the canoe sprint finals with gold medal of Noemi Pupp who was the winner of women’s K1 1000 metres final. In the final Justyna Iskrzycka from Poland was second and Isabel Contreras from Spain third. The Hungarian national anthem was played after women’s K2 200 metres final, where their crew finished the race ahead of Poland and Germany.

Bálint Kopasz and Bence Nádas were crowned European Champions in men’s K2 500 metres final. Germany won silver medal and Lithuania bronze. In women’s C2 200 metres final Giada Bragato and Bianka Nagy won the European Champion title for Hungary. Spain was second and Germany third.

There was a tie in women’s K1 500 meters final, where two bronze medals were awarded to Slovenian Anja Osterman and Emma Jorgensen from Denmark. The European Champion title went to Anna Pulawska from Poland, while Eszter Rendessy from Hungary finished second.

Anna Pulawska was also a member of golden Polish K4 crew that celebrated the European Champion title over 500 meters. Denmark was second and Hungary third.

The European Championships Munich 2022 concluded with 5000 metres events that were postponed from Saturday because of thunderstorm. Fernando Pimenta (POR), Walter Bouzan (ESP) and Rafal Rosolski (POL) were the best in men’s kayak. Hungarian Emese Kohalmi was the fastest in women’s kayak, winning the title and gold medal. Susanna Cicali from Italy was second and Eva Barrios from Spain third. In women’s canoe Spain’s Maria Corbera recorded a comfortable win ahead of Annika Loske from Germany and Liudmyla Babak from Ukraine.

“We cannot sit back, the field is obviously very strong.”

The Hungarian kayak canoeing team won 14 medals, 7 gold, 4 silver and 3 bronze at the European Kayak Canoeing Championships, which ended on Sunday in Munich, five of the podium places – in a 2-2-1 distribution – were in Olympic events.

In his assessment, the federation captain Csaba Hüttner said that they could be fully satisfied, because the events they had won at the World Championships in Canada two weeks earlier had been won again.

“We have won three more and we have also made progress in the Olympic numbers in terms of medals and points. In this year’s world championships, five of our six Olympic champions from last year did not compete, but this young team was able to win the points race at both the World Championships and the European Championships, finishing at the top of the medal table at the European Championships, which is a very big thing,” he said.

He pointed out that the women’s kayak division has also made progress in the Olympic numbers, but of course they are waiting for the return of the experienced competitors who missed this season for various reasons.

“If we can bring back the experienced racers and still teach the youngsters, we will be able to achieve great results,”

he added.

Hüttner said Hungary was back on the map in men’s kayaking in the quadruple sculls – the team finished fourth this time after finishing 11th at the World Championships – and that this was very important for qualification for next year’s Olympics. The captain once again highlighted

Bálint Kopasz, who won the K-1 1000m and K-2 500m with Bence Nádas, and who also doubled in the two pentathlon events at the European Championships.

“This is a historic feat in sport. It is very rare to meet such a professional athlete,” he said.

According to Csaba Hüttner, the canoe pair Giada Bragato and Bianka Nagy, who brought home a total of four medals from the two world championships, have improved a lot this year, are making progress year on year and hope to be in contention for victory in the future.

The national captain has repeatedly said that he sees this year as a trial year ahead of the 2023 World Championship qualifiers.

“We cannot sit back, the field is obviously very strong. We have to make a plan to get the maximum number of quotas next year, even at the expense of results. We have a lot of athletes who can be successful in the five-peat and depending on the way the Games are run, we will need a lot of fresh people in Paris,”

said Csaba Hüttner.
