Chaos on the road to Budapest Airport: Travellers urged to leave an hour earlier amid roadworks, airport bus affected too

Travelling to Budapest Airport between 7 and 24 July? Brace yourself for potential delays. Due to roadworks near the Vecsés junction of the M4 motorway, passengers are advised to allow at least an extra hour for their journey to ensure they don’t miss their flights.
Three-phase roadworks near Budapest Airport
The road reconstruction project affects a critical junction leading to Liszt Ferenc International Airport, though the airport itself is not directly involved in the works. According to AIRportal.hu, the renovations will take place in three phases:
- Phase 1 (7–11 July): Only one lane will be open towards Budapest and two lanes towards the airport at the M4’s terminal junction, near the Route 4 intersection.
- Weekday disruptions only: The work will not affect weekend traffic, so motorists can expect normal conditions on Saturdays and Sundays.
- Unpredictable timing: The schedule may change depending on weather, logistics, and other external factors, so travellers should check updates frequently.

The project is being carried out by the Hungarian Concession Infrastructure Development Corporation (MKIF Plc.), not the airport operator itself.
Public transport also affected
Changes are also in place for bus 200E and Volánbusz services, which connect the airport with Budapest’s city centre and surrounding areas:
- During the entire construction period, buses heading into the city will not stop at the usual Vecsés-Nyugat stop. Instead, a temporary stop roughly 100 metres away has been set up.
- For passengers heading to the airport, route modifications are expected in the third phase of the project. Details will be provided later by MKIF.
Airport’s official advice: Travel smart
In a statement, Budapest Airport urges all travellers to plan ahead and leave significantly earlier than usual, recommending an extra hour of travel time to avoid missing flights.
Though the construction is outside their control, the airport emphasises the importance of preparation, especially during the busy summer travel season.
