Christian Democrats mark totalitarian dictatorship victims’ day

The co-ruling Christian Democrats stressed the need to pay tribute to the victims of totalitarian regimes on Thursday, marking the European Day of Remembrance for Victims of Totalitarian Regimes.

On this day Hungarians must remember the heinous acts faced over the past century, the party said in a statement.

“Hungary today is a truly democratic state where people live in safety and their assets are safe as well,” the Christian Democrats said.

Hungarians, however, have experience in what it means to live under a communist or a Nazi regime, they said, highlighting the importance of “working further towards building a strong and sovereign country with a fair regime”.

The party reaffirmed its creed that a system built on the Christian Democratic principle of safeguarding human dignity can be the best tool in the fight against totalitarian rule.

The European Day of Remembrance for Victims of Totalitarian Regimes has since 2011 been marked on August 23, the anniversary of the 1939 Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact concluded by Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union.
