Conference, exhibition on Timisoara uprising opens at EP Brussels headquarters
Brussels, December 2 (MTI) – Laszlo Tokes, a former Reformed bishop and a hero of Romania’s 1989 revolution, opened a conference and exhibition about the Timisoara (Temesvar) uprising that started the revolution and the experiences of the past 25 years at the European Parliament’s headquarters in Brussels.
Tokes, currently an MEP of Hungary’s ruling Fidesz party, said the uprising marked the start of a process that has not yet finished.
Head of the Hungarian paliament’s foreign affairs committee Zsolt Nemeth said that solidarity between Hungarians and Romanians had played a crucial role in the events of 1989, which he described as “moments of total ethnic reconciliation”. Nevertheless, a few months later Romanians could be instigated to attack Hungarians in Targu Mures (Marosvasarhely), he added.
These two trends have been battling with each other ever since in Romania, Nemeth said. He described a recent decision on the Szekely Miko College of the Reformed Church as an “open attempt at a coup to stop restitution”. Restitution has come to a halt and it is feared that the same will happen in the case of other minority churches in Romania, as well, he added.
However, he said that the recent appointment of Klaus Iohannis to president may represent a new chance considering that he is a Transylvanian Saxon who obviously understands the difficulties minorities are facing.
