Fully 70 Covid-19 patients, most of them elderly with underlying illnesses, have died in Hungary over the past 24 hours while 3,581 have been officially diagnosed with coronavirus, bringing the total number of registered infections to 82,780, koronavirus.gov.hu said on Monday.

The death toll has risen to 1,889, while 20,476 have made a recovery. There are 60,415 active infections and 4,417 Covid patients being cared for in hospital, 313 on ventilators.

Fully 29,750 people are in official home quarantine, and the number of tests has increased to 1,097,371.

Border controls and restrictions on entry are still in place, and citizens have been asked to avoid participating in large events.

Wearing face masks is obligatory in shops, on public transport and in cinemas, theatres, shopping malls, health-care and social-care facilities.

Starting on Monday, mask-wearing will also be mandatory at entertainment venues, restaurants and in catering facilities at sporting events.

Restaurants and entertainment venues must close after 11pm. Also, a ban is in place on visits to hospitals and nursing homes.

Most registered infections are in Budapest (21,462), Pest County (10,168) and the counties of Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén (5,282), Győr-Moson-Sopron (5,247), Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg (4,495) and Hajdú-Bihar (4,297). Tolna County has the fewest infections (891).
