Transportation and Investment Minister Dávid Vitézy announced the launch of a railway renovation programme to reduce temporary speed restrictions on high-density lines in a post on Facebook on Wednesday.

Vitézy said renovations of part of the Budapest-Pécs line and of the Szerencs-Nyíregyháza line were underway at a cost of more than HUF 4bn. Speed restrictions are in effect on around 40pc of Hungary’s 5,900km of railways, he added.

Hungary to join European high-speed rail initiative

Hungary’s government wants to participate in the shared effort to build up Europe’s high-speed rail network, Vitézy said ahead of a meeting of his European Union peers in Luxembourg on Monday.

In a post on Facebook, Vitézy said Hungary also wanted to be a part of efforts to upgrade military mobility on Europe’s rail network, while making domestic developments to benefit international hauliers. He added that Hungary would table proposals on improving European and domestic rail networks.

In a later post, Vitézy said air passenger rights and the transparency of passenger compensation, regulations governing railway tickets for cross-border stretches, and the shift to electromobility were also on the agenda of the meeting.
