Declining tourism in Hungary: Guest nights fall 92.7% in December

The number of guest nights at commercial accommodations in Hungary fell by an annual 92.7 percent to 147,000 in December as the pandemic continued to impact the tourism industry, data released by the Central Statistical Office (KSH) on Thursday show.

The number of guest nights spent by domestic tourists fell by 89.0 percent to 104,000, while the number spent by foreign VISITORS plunged by 96.0 percent to 44,000.

The number of foreign travellers in Hungary was around 14,000. The number of domestic travellers was 33,000.

KSH noted that after November 10, commercial accommodations were not allowed to receive tourists, only travellers arriving on business, economic or educational purposes under restrictions introduced to contain the second wave of the pandemic in the country.

The biggest drop in the number of foreign visitors and guest nights spent was recorded in the Lake Balaton region (99pc) and Budapest (98pc).

Revenue of commercial accommodations dropped by 93.4 percent to 3 billion forints (EUR 8.3m) in December from the same month a year earlier.

For the full year of 2020, the number of guest nights at commercial accommodations dropped by an annual 57.7 percent to 13,332,000. The number of guest nights spent by domestic travellers fell by 38.9 percent to 9,639,000 and the number of nights spent by foreigners dropped by 76.6 percent to 3,693,000.

Revenue of commercial accommodations declined by 59.4 percent to 228.1 billion forints in 2020.
