Did PM Viktor Orbán turn against Putin?

European Union Hungary NATO Russia Ukraine Viktor Orbán war

It has been nearly a week since the Russian invasion broke out in Ukraine. The events shocked the world and had numerous effects on all aspects of life. The current happenings could have a major impact on the future of many countries. Besides, public opinion will change forever about Vladimir Putin and Russia.

The impact of war on the world

The economic effects of war are spreading around the globe due to globalisation. The measures and austerity tightening affecting Russia and Belarus by the European Union and the United States pose serious concerns for the countries’ population.

The West promises Ukraine arms, ammunition and assistance.

However, Ukraine is not a member of NATO and cannot benefit from the associated mutual defence agreement. The U.S., countries of the European Union and many other nations appear to be openly turning against Russia. Ukrainian President Vlodymyr Zelensky requested that Ukraine be admitted to the European Union under an accelerated procedure.

In the case of Ukraine, there has been such an intense open confrontation against Russia that we have not seen since the Cold War.

The clear resolution of NATO and the European Union may have surprised Russian PM Vladimir Putin, writes CNN. Even former Russian-friendly leaders, such as Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, have taken a stand against Russia. In addition to Orbán, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan also turned against Putin because of the Ukrainian attack.

Zelensky, the hero.

Not only the war but also the Ukrainian President Vlodymyr Zelensky has a big role to play in turning nations against the Russians. As a desperate act, Zelensky repeatedly asked the public for help writes blikk.hu. The most shocking moment was when he said

he does not know how long he and his country could last.

For many, Zelensky remained a former actor and comedian. However, the Ukrainian President’s sincerity and declaration of defence are in line with the values of the European Union and NATO.

“They are one of us and we want them in,”

said European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. Zelensky also generates a story around himself that he opposes oppressive tyrant power. In this respect, he comes across as similar to the Polish Lech Walesa or the Hungarian Imre Nagy.

Imre Nagy served as the President of the Council of Ministers during the 1956 Hungarian Revolution. He was sentenced to death and executed in a fake trial for his role in the revolution.

Hungary has to coexist with Russia and Mr. Orban. Zelensky is a brave man. However, people of Ukraine are dying. Could this war have been avoided had Ukraine would have given up wanting to join the EU and NATO? Could Ukraine not have declared neutrality?

At one point, Russia was sending missiles to Cuba. President Kennedy forced the stoppage. Should Putin should not have been given the same consideration?

I knew that it would only be a matter of time before you piped up with your pro Russian views. Only a few weeks ago you were advocating here in the DNH that Hungary turns it back on the EU because it can always borrow money from Russia. (according to you). Your hatred of the EU is astonishing, all the more because you live in Canada, for god’s sake! You don’t even live in Europe! Since your love of Russia is so great, why not swap the comforts of Canada and go and live in Russia?

I don’t think Orban has turned his back on Russia, it’s more like Orban kept the interests of Hungary above the EU-Russia spat. Hungary is a small country surrounded by powerful countries and thus it only makes sense that Hungary would be neutral, making deals between EU countries and China or Russia, until Russia invaded Ukraine, which forced Orban to approve of the sanctions against Russia.

@mariavontheresa. can you not see the similarities of US not wanting missiles that can reach it territory from Cuba and Russia, not wanting NATO on its border? Politics is a chess game, you want a secure border. That is common sense.

Main interest in his chess match is Hungary remains neutral and the EU with the US will not start a third world war.

Mr. Orban does not need to turn his back on Russia and Mr. Putin. Mr. Orban can deplore the attack only on Ukraine and still have an oil and gas supply agreement. Hungary gets 80% of its gas from Russia.

@mariavontheresa, you often purport to be well read, in which case you will have at some time read the following. First, a country cannot become a member of NATO if it is involved involved in a conflict, so the on-going situation in Donetsk and Luhansk, a situation that there appeared no end to, prevented Ukraine form joining NATO. Secondly, Hungary has many times stated that it would block Ukraine’s membership of NATO (for others reasons) and without unanimity, membership of NATO was dead in the water. Putin knew this. The NATO aspect of this war (although as a pro Russian, you are probably using the party line of ‘special operations’) was and is a red herring, a pretext.

@mariavontheresa, you are right, as Hungary was in the EU, Ukraine’s entry into NATO is vetoed. However, governments change. Russia cannot depend that future Prime Ministers will follow the same policy.

It is now too late. The war has started. There will be many casualties on both sides. Ukraine is not going to win, just as Poland, Czechoslovakia and Hungary lost when rebelled against Russia. It seems David and Goliath’s battle and David’s win is not the norm.
