It all kicked off at 5 a.m. on Christmas Day, 25 December, when police on Rákóczi Street between the Astoria M2 metro station and the Blaha Lujza Square asked the driver to show his documents, according to infostart.hu. Instead of pulling over, the 28-year-old floored the accelerator, ignoring the officers’ calls and sparking a high-speed chase.

Police gave chase and cornered him on the Megyeri Bridge. Inside the car, they found the driver—its owner—along with a 26-year-old female passenger and a 27-year-old male companion. It quickly emerged that the woman was wanted for a minor offence, while the man had multiple warrants out for various law-breaking.

Drugs and false license plate

The discoveries didn’t stop there. The driver had no valid licence, and tucked in his socks were 13.1 grams of white powder. Officers also seized a syringe filled with a suspicious liquid, believed to be narcotics.

Quick drug tests came back positive for all three, prompting blood samples and formal questioning as suspects for drug possession.

To top it off, the English plate didn’t match the vehicle—leading to extra charges for tampering with its unique identifier. The driver now faces a raft of traffic violations too, including blasting through red lights in the crowded city centre.
