Dutch man arrested after abusing and terrorising his wife in Hungary

The Miskolc District Court has ordered the one-month pre-trial detention of a Dutch man living in Hungary who regularly abused and terrorised his wife, the Miskolc Tribunal announced on Wednesday.
Dutch man terrorised his wife
According to the court, the suspect and his wife moved to a small village in Borsod County about a year ago. The man led a heavy-drinking lifestyle and repeatedly assaulted his wife, leaving her in a constant state of fear.
On the evening of 1 September, after a day-long quarrel, the man threatened to kill his wife. He poured gasoline on the floor, and as his wife passed him, he splashed fuel on her leg as well. He then began to struggle with her and attempted to prevent her from leaving the house.
He threatened to kill her
The woman eventually managed to escape to the summer kitchen, but the suspect followed, telling her he would kill them both. She climbed over a fence and sought help from a neighbour.
Police officers later found the Dutch man lying on the ground with cuts on both wrists, after which paramedics transported him to the hospital.
The tribunal indicated that if the man’s actions are proven, they could constitute the crime of preparing to commit homicide as well as domestic violence involving deprivation of personal liberty. Given the seriousness and cumulative nature of the offences, a severe prison sentence can be expected.
